17 electric buses for emissions-free sightseeing in Vienna

In the "Zero Emission Transport" project by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, businesses operate emission-free in the 1st and 2nd districts. Vienna Sightseeing Tours is converting its entire fleet for this purpose.

In the “Zero Emission Transport” project, 32 companies from various industries voluntarily committed at the beginning of June to entering the first and second districts of Vienna emission-free.

While the majority of them use cars, small transporters, or lorries, Vienna Sightseeing Tours operates fully electric buses.

“This is remarkable,” says Davor Sertic, Chairman of the Transport and Traffic Division of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.

“Because on the streets, we are mostly familiar with smaller electric vehicles like cars or delivery vans, but not double-decker buses,” he adds.

“The Viennese transport sector is leading the way in climate protectio,” states Sertic.

Vienna Sightseeing Tours already operate three electric buses from the Spanish manufacturer UNVI.

An additional 14 have been ordered and will be delivered in the coming months.

This will mean that the entire fleet of the company will be converted to emission-free drives.

Saving 3,100 tonnes of CO2

“We are delighted to be part of Zero Emission Transport and to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in Vienna,” says Lisa Frühbauer, Managing Director of Vienna Sightseeing Tours.

“Over the first five years of operation, our 17 electric buses will cover approximately 2.6 million kilometres and save around 3,100 tonnes of CO2.”

According to the manufacturer, the buses have a range of 200 kilometres, which covers the daily mileage on the three routes operated by Vienna Sightseeing Tours.

Inside each vehicle, there are four batteries with a capacity of 72 kWh each. These can be charged at 150 kW.

“To operate as sustainably as possible, we are establishing charging parks at two locations in Vienna, where our buses will be powered by green electricity,” explains Frühbauer.

“In addition, these two charging parks will be equipped with photovoltaic systems.”

Project “Zero Emission Transport”

With “Zero Emission Transport” by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, companies demonstrate their willingness to voluntarily contribute to climate protection.

As part of the project, they commit to entering the first and second districts of Vienna emission-free.

Many companies can already achieve this 100%, while others, at the start of the project, can only carry out a portion of their journeys emission-free.

However, the goal of this initially three-year project is for all participating companies to reach a 100% quota by continuously converting their fleets.
