Last Mile Solutions strengthens its leadership in Europe and commits to the future of V2G

In an interview with Mobility Portal Europe, Eric van Voorden, CEO of Last Mile Solutions, outlines the company's strategy, renowned for providing the "largest EV charging management platform in Europe." What is the secret formula?
Last Mile Solutions

Founded in the Netherlands in 2007, Last Mile Solutions has firmly established itself as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging management across Europe.

From its inception, the company has contributed to the development of international standards such as OCPP and OCPI, which are essential for ensuring interoperability within the industry.

Currently, the firm manages over 221,000 directly connected charging stations and 1.1 million active “refuelling” cards, positioning it as “the largest platform on the continent”.

This is confirmed by CEO Eric van Voorden to Mobility Portal Europe.

“Since the early days, Last Mile Solutions has acted as a white label platform for Mobility Service Providers (MSPs) and Charge Point Operators (CPOs), ensuring independence by acting as a pure platform service provider,” he elaborates.

What sets them apart in the market?

“We offer multi-currency and end-to end billing, settlement, and collection services that cater to the specific payment habits per country,” the CEO explains.

This multi-currency capability and compliance with local regulations have been critical for the company’s expansion.

And that’s not all.

Their Roaming as a Service (RAAS) solution ensures Europe’s most extensive charging network, enhancing the experience for EV drivers.

One of their standout services is home reimbursement for employees charging corporate EVs at home.

“This service is aligned with local tax legislation,” Van Voorden notes.

The platform’s API-based approach also facilitates seamless integration with the CRM systems of CPOs and MSPs.

What is their leadership strategy in Europe?

Last Mile Solutions combines a comprehensive offering with a long-term vision.

According to the CEO, the key factors driving their success include a robust platform, a white-label approach, and independence as a provider.

“Our strategic direction is focusing on all our clients, and not just a few that are also our shareholders,” Van Voorden asserts.

Among the company’s most notable innovations is Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, which allows EVs to return energy to the grid.

While pilot projects have already been implemented, Van Voorden acknowledges regulatory challenges:

We see clear added value in V2G. However, it’s the system of grid codes, energy regulations, and tax regulations that make the implementation of V2G applications complex and requiring cooperation of multiple stakeholders.”

He emphasises: “Nevertheless, we are positive that this will be resolved, and we will see the first large-scale V2G applications in the next few years.”

Last Mile Solutions focuses on Europe

This year, the company expanded its operations to the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, with plans to enter new markets annually.

According to Van Voorden, the expansion is being executed methodically: “We will do it with a controlled approach, so we can manage the scale up in a healthy way.”

With new regulations emerging within the European Union, the company is evolving into an integrated platform for EV charging and payments.

The firm also assures that, soon, commercial road transport will become a substantial pillar of their business as well.

In this context, France stands out as one of the key markets for Last Mile Solutions.

There, the company has identified challenges, including low price transparency and the need for direct payment solutions at charging stations.

To address these issues, they have developed a cloud-based solution in partnership with Mastercard, simplifying transactions and enhancing user experience.

Additionally, France leads in adopting smart charging—a trend the company is leveraging through its Edge solution.

“Edge adjusts the loads in response to available power while prioritizing solar energy consumption to reduce excess feed into the grid,” Van Voorden confirms.

Commitment to sustainability

In addition to its technological leadership, Last Mile Solutions is committed to fostering smart and sustainable cities.

The company has processed over 106 million charging transactions, avoiding more than 22.7 million kilograms of CO2 emissions—equivalent to preserving 70 hectares of forest.

Against this backdrop, Last Mile Solutions’ mission is clear: “To support cities in transitioning to a renewable energy ecosystem and contribute to the success of electromobility in Europe.”
