Rome Introduces Its First 12-Metre Iveco Electric Buses

Rome recently unveiled the first eight Iveco E-Way electric buses, marking a significant milestone for the capital's public transport system. These units are part of a broader order of 411 eBuses awarded to Atac, Rome's public transport operator, through a partnership between Iveco and the dealership Romana Diesel.

The Rome contract includes 396 fully electric three-door buses, each 12 metres long, and 15 articulated three-door units, measuring 18 metres.

The first eight vehicles are undergoing pre-delivery checks and will enter service on 20 January, with the entire fleet expected to be delivered by April 2026.

The total contract value exceeds 220 million euros, of which 208 million euros are funded through Italy’s PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), with an additional 12 million euros in self-financing.

The 12-metre units to Rome are equipped with 53 Ah traction batteries, providing a capacity of 340 kWh.

They feature:

  • Fire prevention systems and emergency fireports
  • AVM systems for fleet management
  • Video surveillance systems
  • Multimedia displays for passenger information
  • LED destination signs
  • Air conditioning
  • Disabled access with manual ramps.

For enhanced driver safety, the cockpit is fully separated from the passenger area, with the front door’s first section reserved exclusively for the driver.

The unveiling was attended by key city officials, including Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Mobility Councillor Eugenio Patanè.

Each bus can accommodate 87 passengers (excluding the driver), including 20 seated passengers and one wheelchair space.

Additionally, the vehicles are fitted with Tap&Go validators, enabling contactless payments via credit or debit cards.

Initially, the buses will operate from the Full Green depot in Portonaccio, with further deployment planned at depots in Trastevere, Grottarossa, and Tuscolana.

Key routes to benefit from these new vehicles include:

  • Route 64 (Termini – San Pietro)
  • Route 46 (Venezia – Monte Mario)
  • Route 51 (San Giovanni – Colosseo – Venezia – San Giovanni)
  • Route H (Termini – Capasso/Bravetta)
  • Route 62 (San Pietro – Tiburtina)
  • Route 75 (Indipendenza – Bonnet/Gianicolo).

The unveiling was attended by key city officials, including Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Mobility Councillor Eugenio Patanè.

Mayor Gualtieri stated: “Today, we are not just presenting a new batch of buses; we are introducing the first 110 of over 400 fully electric buses that will serve some of the most critical routes in our city.”

These buses, purchased with PNRR funds, produce zero emissions and zero noise pollution, playing a vital role in our environmental policies and in modernising Rome’s public transport system. With these new additions, we are closer to achieving our goal of 1,110 new buses by 2026, reducing the fleet’s average age to just five years,” he added.

Councillor Patanè said: “The arrival of these electric buses marks a historic moment for Atac, as it is the first time we are deploying 12-metre fully electric vehicles. This transformative step will modernise Atac’s fleet, making it more sustainable and comfortable for the benefit of passengers.”

He continued: “By 2026, with 411 electric buses and over 1,100 new vehicles, Rome will have one of the youngest and most advanced public transport fleets in Europe.”

A Transformative Vision for Rome

The initiative underscores Rome’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility.

With innovative technologies such as the Tap&Go system—already enjoying widespread success—and a renewed focus on safety and efficiency, the city is setting a benchmark in public transport modernisation.

By significantly reducing emissions and upgrading its fleet, Rome aims to become a leader in Europe’s transition to greener and more efficient urban transport.
