The Government of Slovakia has approved the recipient for the national ultra-fast charging station (UFC) network project for electric vehicles.
The project will be implemented by the state-owned company MH Invest, s.r.o., which will receive funding from Slovakia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, specifically under the Sustainable Transport component.
The aim of the project is to increase the availability of charging points for electric vehicles along motorways and expressways within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
“The ultra-fast charging station project on motorways and expressways is a significant contribution to the development of electromobility in Slovakia and directly supports our international commitments,” stated Denisa Saková, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Slovakia.
The new project will significantly improve ultra-fast charging coverage on motorways and ensure the construction of at least 228 UFC charging points, providing a minimum of 300 kW for passenger vehicles and 400 kW for commercial vehicles.
These stations will be interoperable and accessible to all customers through international roaming platforms.
Government’s Role and Project Implementation
The Ministry of Economy of Slovakia plays a key role in this project as the strategic coordinator and supervisory authority, ensuring the efficient use of financial resources and alignment with national electromobility policies.
The state-owned company MH Invest, s.r.o. will oversee the project’s implementation, allowing for specialised management and operational-level execution. This approach guarantees expert investment management and flexibility in the construction and operation of charging stations.
Funding and Implementation Phases
The construction of the ultra-fast charging infrastructure is funded under Investment 4, Component 3 of Slovakia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and will be executed in two phases:
- Phase One: Development of electrical capacities by regional distribution companies (Západoslovenská distribučná, Stredoslovenská distribučná, and Východoslovenská distribučná). This phase includes the construction of high-voltage networks and transformer stations at selected rest areas along the TEN-T corridors.
- Phase Two: Construction and operation of ultra-fast charging points by the state-owned MH Invest, s.r.o., which will oversee the investment through concessionaires. This includes securing land leases through the National Motorway Company, as well as carrying out public procurement processes for construction works and services.
Public Procurement and Competitive Environment
The concessionaires will be selected through public procurement procedures in accordance with Slovakia’s Public Procurement Act.
This approach will minimise the financial burden on public funds while fostering a competitive market for charging service providers.
“Slovakia, as part of the TEN-T network, plays a crucial role in international transport. The construction of UFC stations will strengthen its integration into the European charging infrastructure system and enhance its competitiveness in green mobility,” added Minister Denisa Saková.
By approving this project, the Government of Slovakia reaffirms its commitment to sustainable transport and the transition to alternative fuels.
The construction of UFC stations marks a key step in modernising the country’s transport infrastructure and will significantly enhance service quality for electric vehicle drivers.
