Mexican Government launches digital charging platform for EVs

The country has more than 70,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but only 1,200 identified charging points. In response to this need, the government launched a free public platform to facilitate access to charging infrastructure.

The Mexican government has taken a key step in the transition toward sustainable mobility with the launch of a free, public virtual platform that will allow users to find the location and characteristics of electric vehicle charging stations throughout the country.

“One of the main factors for switching to a pure electric vehicle is the visibility and availability of charging points,” highlights Walter Ángel Jiménez, head of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).

Currently, Mexico has more than 70,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but only 1,200 registered charging points.

The platform will not only facilitate access to these points, but will also provide transparent information on costs, availability, and connector types, thus promoting better decision-making for users.

Towards a mobile application for greater accessibility

While the platform is already operational in its web version, the next step will be the development of a mobile application so that users can access information in real time from their smartphones.

“It still doesn’t have a responsive design or a mobile app that allows access in the same way as private platforms,” Jiménez explains. This development will be key to widespread use of the tool and facilitate quick and easy charging point searches.

Furthermore, the digitalization of charging infrastructure will allow Mexico to join the global trend of integrating technological solutions that boost the growth of electromobility.

Platform Features

Mexico’s new digital electromobility platform is presented as a key tool for optimizing access to charging infrastructure throughout the country.

Its design allows electric vehicle drivers to locate charging stations in real time , with detailed information on availability, rates, and connector types.

Unlike other private solutions, this platform is free and publicly accessible , ensuring that any user can use it without restrictions. It also serves a regulatory function , requiring charging station owners to provide up-to-date data on available infrastructure.

“It’s a measure that seeks to make the charging ecosystem more transparent, ensuring that each registered point meets the necessary technical and operational requirements ,” Jiménez explains.

From a technical perspective, the platform simplifies the processes for installing and certifying new charging stations.

Its unified regulatory framework allows companies in the electric and mobility sectors to clearly understand the requirements for operating safely and efficiently.

“The regulation does not impose new obligations, but rather consolidates them into a single instrument, facilitating compliance for all involved,” explains the head of the CRE.

In this context, the development of this tool represents a significant advance in the construction of a reliable charging network, capable of incentivizing the mass adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

Ease of access to information not only empowers users in their transition to electromobility, but also provides certainty to investors and operators in the sector, who now have a clearer and more structured framework for infrastructure growth.

Benefits for the Mexican State

The development of this platform not only benefits users but also represents a strategic advance for the country in terms of technological independence and efficient infrastructure management.

“Previously, all Mexican government services were outsourced. Now, we’re using our own capabilities to develop tools like this,” the head of the CRE emphasizes.

As state property, the database belongs to all Mexicans and guarantees transparent management of information. This also reduces costs and strengthens the national capacity to offer reliable and accessible digital public services.

Furthermore, the initiative is aligned with the decarbonization goals of the energy and transportation sectors, as internal combustion vehicles remain one of the main sources of polluting gas emissions in the country.

The platform’s future will depend on its evolution into a more interactive and far-reaching tool.

According to Jiménez, once the president enacts the secondary laws, the Ministry of Energy will assume operation of the platform, ensuring its long-term maintenance and growth.

With this strategy, Mexico is positioning itself as a pioneer in electromobility regulation, offering an innovative solution that not only encourages the adoption of electric vehicles, but also provides certainty and confidence to users.
