Rosenbauer handed over the first “Revolutionary Technology” (RT) vehicle to the Fire Department of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

This RT model is designed as an electric rescue fire engine (eHLF 20).

With its fully electric drive, integrated Energy Backup System, and adjustable height, it not only reliably masters the regular operations of the professional fire service but also extreme situations.

The innovative vehicle concept with its integrated driver and crew cabin, rear-axle steering, and significant ergonomic advantages tailored for firefighting operations, meets the specific requirements of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Additionally, the eHLF boasts a special water fording capability of 800 mm, which will facilitate future operations in flooded areas, particularly in the port district.

“With the procurement of our all-electric emergency vehicles, we are breaking new ground in firefighting and rescue services and are thus setting an example for an even more powerful and sustainable Hamburg Fire Department,” says Jörg Sauermann, Head of the Hamburg Fire Department.

“In particular, the design of the new electric rescue fire engine significantly simplifies work at the scene. We are proud to receive vehicles specifically tailored to Hamburg’s needs today.,” he adds.

The vehicle features an electric drive system and has a wheelbase of 4,100 mm. It can carry 1,600 liters of water and 120 liters of foam.

The load corresponds to that of a standard HLF 20, supplemented by specialized gear for the Hamburg Fire Department.

The fully integrated cabin provides space for up to eight personnel.

Thanks to rear-axle auxiliary steering and a mirror replacement system, the vehicle is highly maneuverable, despite its compact width of only 2.35 m.

A distinctive feature of the Hamburg RT is its ability to traverse water depths of up to 800 mm when the adjustable chassis is set to its highest level.

This capability is not a standard model feature but was made possible through specific vehicle modifications at the customer’s request.

“Once again, it demonstrates the high adaptability of this innovative vehicle architecture to our customers’ specific operational needs. This makes it the fire truck of the future,” says Sebastian Wolf, CEO of Rosenbauer International AG.

Planning for the eHLF for the Fire Department of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg began in 2021, with initial discussions between Rosenbauer and the fire department taking place at Interschutz 2022.

In 2023, Hamburg’s professional fire department officially commissioned Rosenbauer to produce the RT.

To facilitate a smooth transition for emergency personnel across various fire stations, Rosenbauer developed an e-learning program that interactively conveys the essential vehicle functions.

With this comprehensive training, the Hamburg Fire Department is optimally prepared for deploying the new RT.
