The agreement was signed by Saudi Aramco Technologies Company (SATC), a subsidiary of Aramco, and BYD, with the aim of improving energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of transportation.
The collaboration will leverage the research and development capabilities of both companies to achieve progress in propulsion technologies and low-carbon emission fuels.
Ali A. Al-Meshari, Senior Vice President of Technology Oversight & Coordination at Aramco, stated that the company is exploring various ways to optimize transportation efficiency, from innovative fuels to advanced propulsion system concepts.
Luo Hongbin, Senior Vice President at BYD, emphasized that the partnership aims to incubate solutions that combine high performance with a lower carbon footprint, overcoming geographic and conceptual barriers.
This agreement is part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to increase electric vehicle adoption from the current 1% to 30% over the next five years. However, the country faces infrastructure challenges, with only 101 registered charging stations as of 2024.
Additionally, the collaboration strengthens BYD’s presence in the region, adding to a previous project with Saudi Electricity Company to develop large-scale energy storage systems.
