hylane Expands: E-Truck Rental Service Now Available in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is known as the commercial centre of Europe - especially due to the port of Rotterdam. The expansion is a milestone in hylane's mission to make road transport more sustainable across Europe.
hylane expands commercial vehicle rental with zero-emission trucks in the Netherlands

hylane GmbH has founded the Dutch subsidiary hylane Netherlands BV and is thus expanding its business model in another European country.

The Dutch company rents out emission-free vehicles in a usage-based rental model – including both battery and hydrogen-powered trucks.

The expansion is a milestone in hylane’s mission to make road transport more sustainable across Europe.

It offers other companies the opportunity to use zero-emission vehicles easily and at low risk.

Sara Schiffer, Managing Director of hylane GmbH and hylane Netherlands BV, says: “By entering the Dutch market, we are transferring our proven rental model for zero-emission trucks to another key logistics market. Many of our customers operate cross-border—thus, it is a logical step for us to expand our offering internationally.”

“In doing so, we can build on our experience in the German market, where we have established ourselves as one of the leading providers,” she adds.

Attractive framework conditions in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is known as the commercial centre of Europe – especially due to the deep-water port of Rotterdam, a major European transport hub.

This strategic location ensures high demand in the heavy goods logistics sector – ideal conditions for zero-emission transport solutions.

hylane supports Dutch transport companies in decarbonizing their fleets with a usage-based rental model for zero-emission vehicles.

The Dutch SWIM subsidy program makes it much easier to ramp up the market for alternative drive systems.

It not only promotes the purchase of zero-emission trucks, but also the expansion of the necessary hydrogen filling station infrastructure.

Thanks to the existing network of filling stations in the Netherlands, transport companies can already maintain their existing routes with sustainable drive technology, while the SWiM funding program will open up further strategically located filling stations.

Maximilian Draxler, Managing Director of hylane BV, states: “The Netherlands is a pioneer in sustainable logistics – with a strong infrastructure, political support and a high degree of openness to alternative drivetrains. This offers ideal conditions for the use of our vehicles.”

“With our usage-based rental model, we create easy access to zero-emission trucks for companies – without investment risk and with full operational support,” he adds.

SWiM funding program supports market launch

hylane has applied for the Dutch funding program SWiM (Subsidieregeling Waterstof in Mobiliteit) with three consortia.

Each consortium is made up of one of the leading filling station operators TEAL Mobility, Fountain Fuel and Vissers.

The approved funding will be used to purchase both hydrogen combustion engine and fuel cell trucks.

The funding covers up to 80 percent of the difference between the acquisition costs for diesel and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

hylane will use the funding in full to reduce rental rates for its customers.

Kees Verbogt, Policy Advisor for The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, indicates: “With SWiM we try to help fixing a chicken and egg situation: funding refilling stations and vehicles at the same time.”

Rent zero-emission trucks on a pay-per-use basis

hylane offers companies the opportunity to deploy zero-emission vehicles easily and at low risk.

Through usage-based rental (in the so-called pay-per-use model), customers only pay for the kilometres actually driven.

As a result, hylane assumes the technology and financing risk.

At the same time, companies benefit from a comprehensive range of services:

The rental price includes maintenance, insurance, general inspection and other services.

The hydrogen and the driver themselves are not included. The same applies to battery-electric trucks.

Vehicle portfolio of hylane Netherlands BV

Customers of hylane Netherlands BV can choose from a range of zero-emission vehicles, including battery-powered and hydrogen-powered trucks.

At the start, hydrogen combustion engines from MAN, fuel cell trucks from Hyundai and battery-powered trucks from Daimler will be offered.

The tractor unit from MAN uses a hydrogen combustion engine and achieves a maximum range of up to 600 kilometres.

It stores 56 kilogram hydrogen at 700 bar and can be fully refuelled in around 15 minutes.

The Hyundai “XCIENT Fuel Cell” model is based on a fuel cell system and offers a range of around 400 kilometres.

The hydrogen is stored in seven tanks, which can be fully refuelled within eight to 20 minutes.

The range is supplemented by a battery-powered tractor unit from Daimler, which offers a range of around 500 kilometres.

To recharge the truck from 20 to 80 percent takes approximately 60 minutes.

Richard Frenz, Vice President at MAN Truck & Bus SE, says: “With the MAN hTGX hydrogen combustion truck, we are adding a solution for particularly demanding applications to our zero-emission portfolio.”

“Classified as a ‘zero-emission vehicle’, the hTGX makes an important contribution to the decarbonization of road freight transport – especially in countries such as the Netherlands, where hydrogen ecosystems and funding programs are additional success factors,” he adds.

Partnership with filling station operators for the provision of hydrogen

The formation of a consortium with at least one hydrogen filling station operator was a prerequisite for participation in the Dutch SWiM funding program.

As part of this, hylane has entered into strategic partnerships with the three leading Dutch providers: TEAL Mobility, Fountain Fuel and Vissers.

These partnerships enable hylane to offer its customers a reliable and nationwide hydrogen supply.

A fuel card gives rental customers easy access to the existing network of hydrogen filling stations in the Netherlands. This ensures smooth operation of the vehicles in everyday life.

Florentin de Loppinot, CEO of TEAL Mobility, states: “At TEAL Mobility, we proudly support hylane’s entry into the Dutch market. As a SWiM program laureate, we are accelerating the transition to zero-emission logistics.”

“With five hydrogen stations operating in the Netherlands — and two more opening soon — under the TotalEnergies brand, plus 7 additional stations in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and France, we are building the cross-border infrastructure for sustainable road transport in Europe.”
