Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien announced that the 2025 Electric Small Public Service Vehicle (eSPSV25) Grant Scheme will reopen on Monday 23 June.
The scheme was initially launched in February with a 12.5 million euros budget.
It received a record number of applications, which have now been assessed.
Almost 7.5 million euros has been allocated to successful applicants, meaning just under five million euros will be available when the scheme reopens.
Successful candidates will receive substantial grants to enable the switch to electric vehicles, including:
- 10,000 euros towards the purchase of a new full battery electric SPSV
- 12,500 euros towards the purchase of a new full battery electric wheelchair-accessible SPSV
For those scrapping older, high-mileage, or more polluting vehicles, the grant doubles to:
- 20,000 euros for a new full electric SPSV
- 25,000 euros for a new wheelchair-accessible electric vehicle
“The overwhelming response to eSPSV25 is a clear indication that Ireland’s taxi, hackney and limousine industry is ready for change. High-mileage SPSV owners, who are at the forefront of daily operations, have shown strong support for transitioning to EVs,” says O’Brien.
“This move not only helps reduce carbon emissions but also positions small public service vehicles as leaders in the nation’s broader environmental initiatives,” the Minister adds.
Since its inception in 2018, the eSPSV Grant Scheme has facilitated over 3,200 SPSV operators to make the switch to electric vehicles, contributing significantly to Ireland’s climate goals.
From 23 June anyone eligible for the scheme and interested in applying for the grant can find detailed information, including application forms and guidelines, on the National Transport Authority’s website.
Notes
- Existing SPSV licence holders and new SPSV licence applicants can apply to the eSPSV grant scheme
- New applicants can apply for electric wheelchair accessible taxi or hackney licences and limousine licences only
- Existing saloon SPSV licence holders can apply to upgrade their older or high-mileage ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles to a fully electric vehicle
- Applicants have two months to complete the grant process and get their new electric vehicles on the road as a taxi, hackney or limousine
