At Berlin’s public transport company, the BVG, one in three buses will be electric by the end of 2027.
To achieve this, the company will add 150 more articulated e-buses from the manufacturer Solaris in 2026, a spokesperson announced.
In 2027, 120 more units will be added.
With a total of 550 vehicles, over a third of the 1,500-bus fleet will be electric.
It’s worth noting that operating this type of vehicle requires different infrastructure.
In a historic moment, the BVG laid the foundation stone for its new electric bus depot on Säntisstraße on 8 August 2025—the first new depot to be built in six decades.
With this project, the BVG is not only creating the capacity it urgently needs for its growing fleet but also setting new standards for sustainable mobility in Berlin.
The new location will house around 220 units and will be equipped with modern charging infrastructure, two workshops, and an administrative building.
Around 180 employees will ensure stable, emission-free bus operations in the future.
The BVG’s goal is to achieve total fossil-fuel neutrality by the early 2030s, and the new depot is a key component of this process.
Along with the second new building on the Spree river, the BVG is creating space for around 500 additional vehicles, a third of its future electric bus fleet.
