CharIN e.V. and EMVCo have announced a joint initiative to promote secure and interoperable payment solutions for electric vehicle (EV) charging.

The project focuses on aligning EMV®-based open payments with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge systems, enabling a seamless and secure payment experience across the global EV charging ecosystem.

Reliable and convenient payments are fundamental to a smooth charging experience.

As the global EV marketplace evolves, it is more important than ever that paying for charging can be as effortless and trustworthy as paying in-store.

To address this need, CharIN and EMVCo’s new joint initiative – titled New Payment Solutions – brings together global industry leaders to discuss how EMV-based payments can work alongside ISO 15118 Plug & Charge systems in an open, secure, and interoperable way.

The project is designed as a multi-phase effort and participants include original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), charging station operators (CSOs) and mobility operators (MOs).

The target of the project is to:

  • Identify and address technical and operational challenges;
  • Align on a commonly agreed new payment solution in accordance with existing standards like ISO 15118;
  • Investigate the possible integration and expansion of conformance tests for interoperability and coexistence between EMV-based open payments and ISO 15118 Plug & Charge.

Michael Keller, CTO of CharIN

Michael Keller, CTO of CharIN, states: “Enabling seamless and secure payment processes is essential for accelerating EV adoption.”

“By aligning ISO 15118 Plug & Charge technology with EMV-based payment solutions, we aim to create a harmonized and scalable approach that benefits both users and the entire charging ecosystem,” he adds.

Patrik Smets, EMVCo Executive Committee Chair, comments: “Collaboration across the ecosystem is key to enabling EV drivers everywhere to have more choice and convenience when paying for charging.”

He continues: “This project with CharIN will shape and inform EMVCo’s ongoing work to leverage EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) technology – which simplifies the digital payment process – to integrate open payments at EV charging stations supporting Plug & Charge.”

The project started with a kick-off meeting on July 21, 2025, with active participation from various industry representatives.
