Logistics companies assert that “conditions are in place” to electrify fleets in Argentina

The Argentine Association of Business Logistics (ARLOG) maintains that the transition to electric fleets is viable in the country, although challenges related to financing, vehicle range, and charging infrastructure still persist.

Electric mobility is no longer seen as a passing trend, but rather as a structural shift within Argentina’s logistics sector.

Gabriel García Polignano, Executive Director of Celsur and board member of ARLOG, told Mobility Portal that “the conditions are in place to assess electrification. It is not a fleeting development, but a transformation that is here to stay.”

He recalls that for many years, Argentina lagged behind in accessing new technologies due to foreign currency restrictions and a closed economy.

Today, the combination of an energy matrix with minimal subsidies for fossil fuels and the need to reduce the carbon footprint presents a window of opportunity for progress.

While macro-energy conditions are conducive to evaluating electric projects, the technology still faces operational hurdles.

“Ranges of 400 to 500 kilometres are not sufficient for medium- and long-distance routes. The major issue lies in the charging network coverage, which is very limited outside large urban areas,” explains García Polignano.

Climatic factors, battery lifespan, and charging times also raise concerns. For this reason, electric logistics is currently concentrated in urban settings, where they prove more agile for last-mile and short-distance operations.

Pioneer Companies Setting the Trend in Argentina

Against this backdrop, several companies are beginning to take the first step. Andreani, Correo Argentino, DHL, and Cabify have already incorporated electric vehicles into their fleets.

While the phenomenon is not yet widespread, these cases serve as pilot schemes for the sector.

“Right now, the main focus is on last-mile logistics. That’s where electric vehicles are most flexible and capable of delivering effective results,” says the executive, who also serves as Treasurer on ARLOG’s board.

There are even some early cases involving medium-distance electric trucks, albeit selectively and following a detailed analysis of each operation.

The Role of Hybrids and a Gradual Transition

Electrification does not imply an immediate abandonment of other technologies. García Polignano highlights that hybrids remain a valid option, especially in a country that is a producer of hydrocarbons.

“For a time, these technologies will coexist. Hybrids continue to offer an excellent balance between range and cost,” he emphasises.

The opening up of imports also supports the transition. The arrival of new manufacturers expands the range of available vehicles and puts downward pressure on prices, making the shift more appealing.

Financing and After-Sales Service: Critical Points

Although the macroeconomic and energy conditions are in place, financial and technical bottlenecks remain. The executive stresses that “financing and access to credit must be straightforward for companies. Growth depends on clear, dollar-denominated lines of credit that make these investments feasible.”

After-sales service is another outstanding issue.

“Whether the vehicles are Chinese or American, all manufacturers must ensure local technical support,” he warns. The lack of robust after-sales infrastructure creates uncertainty for companies considering electric vehicle adoption.

Outlook

According to ARLOG, the future of electric logistics in Argentina will depend on how the economic situation evolves.

“Medium-term forecasts in Argentina are notoriously uncertain. The speed of the electrification process will be defined by the broader context,” summarises García Polignano.

Despite the challenges, the sector agrees that the groundwork is already laid. Access to credit, expansion of charging infrastructure, and a solid after-sales service model will ultimately determine the pace of a transition that companies now see as inevitable.
