Keolis, a leading public transport operator, has been awarded a landmark ten-year contract by the Province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, worth 750 million euros.

This renewal marks a significant milestone for the company, as it prepares to operate and maintain the city bus network, the largest electric fleet in the country, starting December 2025.

Since its inception in the Netherlands in 1999, Keolis has been a key player in the region.

The renewal of this contract underscores its commitment to sustainable mobility and its long-standing partnership with the Utrecht region since 2016.

The new contract includes the deployment of over 250 electric buses, a move aimed at enhancing the network’s efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.

In addition to expanding its electric fleet, Keolis is also focusing on improving the overall user experience.

This includes extending timetables, offering more services, and setting concrete targets for the accessibility of public transport.

The company will also collaborate closely with local associations to ensure that its services are inclusive and accessible to all.

The transition to electric buses will be implemented gradually, with recharging facilities being installed in bus parking areas and depots.

This initiative aligns with the province’s vision of sustainable and inclusive mobility, further reinforcing Keolis’ commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.

Jan Kilström, CEO of Keolis Continental Europe, expressed pride in the team’s efforts and the renewed confidence from the Province of Utrecht.

Despite challenges “such as driver shortages”, the firm has maintained a high level of service quality and passenger satisfaction.

Kilström states that the dedication of the team to the Syntus Utrecht network played a pivotal role in securing the contract renewal.

Keolis’ contract renewal for the Utrecht bus network underscores its commitment to sustainable mobility and its role as a pioneer in the field.

The deployment of the largest electric bus fleet in the Netherlands is a testament to its dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.

As it continues to expand its presence in the country, it is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of public transport in the region.
