Latnovva’s “time trial” challenge to install a network for 50 Yutong electric buses in Mexico City

Latnovva, specialising in renewable energies, is rapidly undertaking a project in Mexico City (CDMX): the installation of a network of 25 chargers for 50 Yutong electric buses.
Latnovva's 'race against the clock' challenge to install network connectivity in 50 Yutong electric buses in Mexico City."

Latnovva faces a significant challenge, with the most notable aspect being the speed at which it is progressing.

Just a month ago, Yutong won the tender to supply electric buses to the CDMX Passenger Transport Network (RTP), and quickly entrusted the company eMobility to handle the electrical installation.

“We participated during the tendering process to explain to them how they had to do the loading part,” says Fernando Ramos, Director of New Technologies at Latnovva.

The project, which involves the installation of 25 chargers within an estimated period of three months, represents a real challenge in terms of logistics and coordination. This type of work usually takes approximately seven or eight months.

It’s not just a matter of connecting cables: it involves complying with all the regulations and permits required by Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), which adds an additional layer of complexity to the job.

In this regard, the expert explains: “Fortunately, the chargers are from the Yutong brand.” A point that makes the task easier, since they are optimized for the electric buses they will feed.

The key to success: speed and efficiency

Latnovva stands out not only for its technical capacity, but also for its ability to optimize costs without compromising quality.

The truth is that during the planning phase, they took care of all the necessary engineering, including managing permits and purchasing the main equipment, ensuring that every detail was ready for installation.

“In record time, we have purchased all the main equipment, we already have the engineering done and approved, and we are carrying out the work,” reveals Ramos, highlighting the efficiency with which the work was carried out.

A company with experience in large projects

The Latnovva team is not new to the industry. With a solid track record in renewable energy projects in different Latin American countries, the company has demonstrated over the years its expertise in the installation of complex electrical systems

Although they have worked on several initiatives in Mexico, this one in particular is one of the most significant due to its scale and the speed with which it is being implemented.

“We have been involved in large solar photovoltaic and wind power plant projects , and this experience has allowed us to face this challenge with confidence,” reflects the executive.

An example is the work they carried out in Mérida, where Latnovva was in charge of optimizing the electrical installation in the La Plancha project, which allowed them to reduce the investment cost in the load by 35 per cent.

Articulation with the Government

The firm’s role in this project also involved close collaboration with the Government and local authorities, to ensure that all phases of the installation comply with current regulations.

Here, Ramos mentions: “In Yucatan, we collaborated with the government in optimizing the electrical system, which allowed us to offer solutions that reduced costs without affecting operations. This experience was invaluable in Mexico City, where we are working hand in hand with the authorities to ensure that everything is in order and working optimally.”

There is no doubt that with the growing demand for sustainable solutions and the pressure to move towards transition in large cities, projects such as the one Latnovva is developing are key.

Yutong and the tender

With a budget of more than 408 million pesos, plus VAT, the 50 new 12-meter units will have the capacity to transport more than 90 people, a battery-powered electric motor, a range of 330 kilometers, a video surveillance system, ventilation and air extraction.

In addition, with Yutong buses, users will have access to a better transportation alternative, free of polluting emissions and noise, in addition to being accessible for the population with some type of disability since they will have a kneeling system, a low entrance at sidewalk level, a ramp for people in wheelchairs and spaces dedicated to them, as well as service animals and Braille signage.

It is worth mentioning that the installation of the area for recharging the units that Latnovva is carrying out will be enabled in module 7, and will have, as mentioned above, 25 electric chargers.

These latest-generation units, which will arrive in Mexico City in September 2024, will operate on two fully electric routes: 34 A (Balderas- Santa Fe) and 57 (Cuatro Caminos- Metro Constitución de 1917).
