ABB acquires France’s BrightLoop to accelerate electrification in marine transport

The move strengthens ABB’s capabilities in power conversion systems for industrial mobility and maritime propulsion.

ABB, the Swiss-Swedish technology group, has signed an agreement to acquire BrightLoop, a French company specialised in advanced power electronics, as part of its strategy to drive electrification in industrial mobility and marine transport.

Under the agreement, ABB will initially acquire a 93% controlling stake in BrightLoop, with plans to acquire the remaining 7% by 2028. The BrightLoop management team will reportedly remain in place following the transaction.

The deal, for which financial terms were not disclosed, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions.

ABB stated that the acquisition will enhance its ability to provide compact, rugged and intelligent power conversion systems for demanding applications, including construction equipment, mining machinery, electric ferries, and offshore vessels.

Founded in 2010 and based in Paris, BrightLoop has reportedly recorded steady growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for electrification across its core sectors.

The company offers a portfolio of high- and low-voltage bidirectional DC/DC converters, known for their efficiency, scalability and compact design. These solutions are already in use across a broad spectrum of industries, including off-highway transport, marine, aerospace, hydrogen mobility, and defence.

ABB noted that both companies remain committed to serving customers in these sectors while pursuing a strategic expansion of market presence.

Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division, commented:

“This acquisition is a strategic leap in our mission to help the transport industry operate more efficiently and sustainably. BrightLoop’s software-defined power platform and high-performance expertise will enable us to deliver greater value as our customers transition to cleaner, smarter energy systems.”

Florent Liffran, CEO of BrightLoop, added:

“We are proud and excited to join the ABB family. Our shared focus on power conversion makes us well-positioned to support the next wave of industrial electrification. With ABB’s industrial and commercial strength, we will enhance our offering for fast-growing markets and continue creating value for our customers.”
