ABB E-mobility powers 100 eBuses in Rome with new charging system

Together with Autoservizi Troiani, a private company operating part of Rome’s public transportation system, ABB E-mobility and Daimler Buses Italia are helping to fully electrify a portion of the city’s bus fleet.

The Italian Government’s ambition to reduce emissions and achieve national climate targets by 2030 has been a key driver of this initiative.

What’s been achieved so far?

• 64 charging points installed (21 more planned)
• 10 Terra 54HV mobile chargers installed
• Electrification timeline accelerated through strategic planning

Electrification efforts will continue this year, with plans to expand the site and install additional chargers.

Why did Autoservizi Troiani choose ABB?

As one of the larger bus companies operating in Rome, a trusted and premium partner was sought out to ensure a successful transition without disrupting daily operations.

Backed by decades of experience in public transit electrification, ABB E-mobility was perfectly positioned to lead the infrastructure build-out and supply reliable charging solutions that will power 110 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro electric buses supplied by Daimler. 

Site Design and Implementation

The project kicked off in early 2024 with ABB E-mobility designing and constructing an efficient depot layout to meet the demands of Autoservizi Troiani’s service.

Configured with cost-effectiveness and scalability in mind, 22 HVC360 power cabinets were installed to supply a total of 84 charging points: 30 overhead-mounted control boxes and 54 pedestal-mounted depot chargers equipped with CCS2 connectors.

All installations are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. 

To maintain high uptime, ABB E-mobility also deployed 10 Terra 54HV mobile chargers and will provide remote monitoring and support to ensure Autoservizi Troiani buses stay powered and on schedule.
