vehicles sold in the Netherlands in 2023 were electric

While the forecast for the year 2023 was set at 340,000 units, this target was exceeded.

The growth is primarily attributed to catching up with delayed deliveries from 2022.

After the catch-up in the first months, the market normalized towards the end of the year.

The brand that registered the most units during 2023 in the Netherlands was Volkswagen.

Meanwhile, the best-selling model was the Tesla Model Y.

Overall, out of the total new sales, 1.1% were diesel, 30.4% petrol, 37.1% hybrid, and 30.8% electric.

The share of EVs in the total number of registrations last year, at 30.8%, was almost 7.5% higher than in 2022, when the share of EVs in new sales was 23.5%.

RAI Vereniging and BOVAG emphasize the importance of subsidization and fiscal incentives for electric vehicles.

However, there are particular concerns for the period after 2025 due to the lack of motivation to transition to electric driving.

Huub Dubbelman, chairman of the passenger car section at RAI Vereniging, states, “There is an urgent need for more clarity and a demonstration of ambition.”

“Mobility must and can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. At the same time, driving must remain affordable,” he adds.

Hence, both industry associations advocate, for example, for a weight correction in Motor Vehicle Tax for electric cars starting in 2026.

Forecast 2024

For this year, RAI Vereniging and BOVAG expect a total of 360,000 cars to be registered.

It remains to be seen what influence stimulation and subsidization will have on the demand and purchase of electric cars by private and business buyers. Furthermore, economic developments play a significant role.

Bert de Kroon, chairman of BOVAG Car Dealers, points to the current recession, high interest rates, and rising labor costs.

“The market is normalizing, but the numbers are still behind with 360,000. With higher costs, we are entering a different time than the past years,” de Kroon says.

“However, there are plenty of opportunities for customers again: stocks have been replenished, and for car-buying consumers, there are now ample opportunities and without long delivery times,” he adds.
