Bari has started rolling out 135 electric buses, acquired through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr). The vehicles are currently operating on selected routes to test charging performance and plan the optimal use of the entire fleet.
According to Mobility Councillor Domenico Scaramuzzi, 13 additional units are expected in the coming days, while the delivery will be completed by early 2026 with 99 twelve-metre buses.
A tender is underway for a new charging station at the Amtab workshop, while design works are being finalised for a second hub in the Poggiofranco district, on Via Mitolo.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to fully electrify Bari’s public transport system. The plan also includes the digitalisation of access services and the introduction of discounted fares.
Environment Councillor Elda Perlino highlighted that the project will help reduce COâ‚‚ emissions and urban heat islands, generating positive impacts on public health.
Luca D’Amore, sole administrator of Amtab, confirmed that the fleet will consist of approximately 135 standard-size electric buses and 42 articulated 18-metre buses for new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services. Charging infrastructure will be installed at both the central depot and the new Poggiofranco hub, which will host up to 80 vehicles. Strategic charging points are also planned at a minimum of four urban terminus stations.
