The Chinese car manufacturer BYD has achieved the milestone of producing nine million plug-in vehicles, making it the world’s first car manufacturer to reach this target, according to the company.
In a statement, the Asian automotive group detailed that the vehicle in question is a unit of the Yangwang U9, the fully electric supercar from BYD’s luxury brand, produced at the Shenzhen-Shanwei factory in China.
The automaker notes that to celebrate what it describes as a “historic” moment for the industry, it has organised a celebration at the production plant itself.
The nine-millionth unit rolled off the assembly lines just two months after the eight-millionth BYD was produced, demonstrating the group’s progress in this area of business.
In 2024, BYD has achieved other milestones in its vehicle sales, with 1.6 million cars sold in the first half of the year, consolidating its position as the “world leader in plug-in vehicle sales”.
Furthermore, the manufacturer states that its YangWang U9 model is considered the flagship of the Chinese automotive industry, combining cutting-edge technology, “top-notch craftsmanship, and unparalleled quality with exceptional performance,” it explains.
Finally, the manufacturer asserts that its automotive business continues to grow, thanks “not only to solid ongoing sales in China but also to the rapid expansion of exports to new markets such as Brazil, Mexico, and Europe.”
In the second quarter of this year, BYD indicates that it climbed the sector rankings to become “the seventh most important car manufacturer in the world,” while its workforce now exceeds 900,000 employees, it concludes.
