ChargePoint Unveils Ultra-Fast Bidirectional AC Architecture for EVs

ChargePoint, a leading provider of networked EV charging solutions, has announced a next-generation AC charging architecture that significantly enhances performance and functionality.

The new platform doubles the speed of typical AC Level 2 chargers and introduces advanced features such as bidirectional charging and seamless smart home integration.

It will support models designed for residential, commercial, and fleet applications in both Europe and North America.

“ChargePoint’s next generation of EV chargers will be revolutionary, not evolutionary,” says Hossein Kazemi, Chief Technical Officer, Hardware at ChargePoint.

“This new architecture enables long-awaited innovations that will transform the experience for both site hosts and EV drivers.”

Key innovations of ChargePoint’s new AC platform:

Bidirectional charging (V2X): allows EVs to act as zero-emission energy sources for homes, buildings, or to feed energy back to the grid.

Ultra-fast AC charging: delivers up to 80 amps (19.2 kW), capable of fully charging a typical EV in about four hours.

Dynamic load balancing: adjusts power distribution automatically based on building energy demand.

Smart home integration: compatible with solar, battery storage, and energy management systems.

Series wiring support: enables efficient multi-vehicle charging in homes or fleet depots without expensive electrical upgrades.

Omni Port technology: supports multiple connector types from a single unit for the North American market.

Backed by nearly 20 years of industry expertise, ChargePoint holds an estimated 61% share of the U.S. public Level 2 AC charging market, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center. The new platform will meet all regulatory requirements, including MID and Eichrecht compliance in Europe and ENERGY STAR® certification in the U.S.

The first models based on this architecture will launch in Europe in summer 2025, followed by North America later that year. ChargePoint aims to redefine AC charging by offering future-ready solutions for a rapidly evolving electric mobility ecosystem.
