More Sun, More Charging: Ohme Sees Photovoltaic Integration as Key to Unlocking the eMobility Market

The British electric charger manufacturer is strengthening its presence on the continent with a strategy focused on adapting its solutions to the specific needs of each market. In Southern Europe, the spotlight is on solar energy—and Humberto de Guetano explains why.

Synchronisation with solar panels, regulatory compliance and geographical expansion are all part of Ohme’s roadmap.

The company, which specialises in charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, took part in Power2 Drive with a clear goal: to consolidate its position beyond the United Kingdom.

Currently holding 60% of the residential market in the UK, Ohme is looking to replicate this leadership in countries such as Spain, France, Germany and across the Benelux region.

“We’re looking to enter the European market, not just remain in the UK,” says Umberto de Guetano, Head of BDM for Southern Europe.

With new offices in Barcelona, Zwolle fyi, Paris and Hamburg, and a growing presence in Australia, Ohme is planning a gradual yet sustained expansion.

“We’re aiming to enter the North and South American markets in the next two years.”

A key differentiator in its Southern European strategy is integration with solar energy. While photovoltaic generation is not a technical priority in the UK, the situation is quite different in regions like Spain and Italy.

“In the UK, integration with solar isn’t particularly relevant because there aren’t many sunny days. Whereas in Southern Europe, it’s a hugely important factor.”

In response, Ohme has begun adapting its products to enable charging directly from surplus solar energy—a feature especially valued in countries with high residential solar adoption.

“We can now work with solar. Not V2G, but simply green charging via solar panels using the excess energy generated,” he tells Mobility Portal Europe.

How to Adapt a Charger for Five Countries: Ohme’s Precision Engineering in Electric Mobility

Scaling a company from a national to a multinational operation means addressing a complex array of technical, regulatory and cultural challenges. Ohme chose a step-by-step strategy centred on deeply understanding the specific demands of each region.

“We want to do things properly, one step at a time. Each market is different.”

In Germany, for instance, they’ve incorporated MID meters to meet local standards for energy measurement accuracy.

“Today we’ve presented our MID product, the MID Meter, which is clearly essential for the German market.”

In the UK, initial connectivity was managed using a built-in 4G SIM card. But as the company expanded into continental Europe—where communal garages and shared residential installations are more common—it became necessary to redesign interfaces.

“We also had to release a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth product, because in the UK most homes are detached. In our other markets, there are clearly many condominiums.”

This technical approach is also reflected in the segmentation of their product line. At Power to Drive in Munich, the company showcased three models: HomePro, Ohme Go and ePod, covering portable 3.7 kW chargers to cable-free 22 kW solutions with universal type 2 sockets.

“We want to do one thing, but do it well. Today we brought three products, all aimed at the residential segment.”

With the new 22 kW E-BOOT, the company is positioning itself to expand into semi-public spaces such as condominiums and office car parks.

“This marks our next stage—moving from residential into a niche segment of semi-public installations.”

From Barcelona to Sydney: Ohme Accelerates Global Expansion with a Focus on New Products

Over the past two years, Ohme has rolled out a network of offices in strategic locations across Europe.

In addition to its headquarters in London, it now has a direct presence in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain.

“We manage the Southern European market from Barcelona, the French market from Paris, and in Germany, we’re based in Hamburg.”

Beyond Europe, the company recently opened an office in Australia as part of its move into the Oceanian market.

This international expansion is being supported by a product development strategy tailored to each region.

“Our products are very focused on residential. We want to move into other markets. We’re also improving our software to launch into fleets, condominiums and so on, which will probably roll out over the summer.”

While the current focus remains on unidirectional charging, Ohme is not ruling out a move into bidirectional technologies.

“We’re committed to exploring this. In fact, over the next few months we’re already beginning to work on it through some pilot projects.”
