Ecoinside’s Success Formula? Winning eMobility Tenders and Over 300 Charging Points by 2025

The Portuguese company aims to double its network of electric vehicle chargers by the end of 2025. How will it achieve this ambitious goal?

Founded nearly 20 years ago, Ecoinside stands out in the electric vehicle (EV) charging sector with a series of recently won public tenders, consolidating its position in the Portuguese market.

At the “Storage, Renewable, and Electric Vehicles Integration Forum” organised by Mobility Portal Europe, António Cunha Pereira, co-CEO of Ecoinside, shares the company’s expansion goals and updates on its bids.

“As we have some charging points that have been operational for over three years, we make our business plans with real-time data. I believe this is one of our advantages in public tenders,” he states.

Ecoinside’s Success Formula

The Portuguese company has been awarded significant public procurements, such as the MOBI.E Ruas Elétricas project, a flagship initiative for the installation of chargers in some of Portugal’s largest cities.

“We followed this tender and won a spot in one of the largest cities. We also secured one in Fátima, a highly visited location, where we will install both fast and conventional EV chargers,” shares Cunha Pereira.

He adds, “We won another three public procurements where we signed a framework agreement with the Ministry of Health, meaning we will be installing chargers in hospitals and other related locations.”

The company relies on data generated from its current charging stations to accurately select each opportunity and invest in those it considers most relevant, taking into account customer demand and the financial outlay.

For these competitions, the evaluation of bidders was based on three factors: the amount of investment, the maximum price to be charged to users, and the profit margin that MOBI.E will receive according to the established pricing.

The company asserts that its ability to optimise investment is what makes its proposal attractive.

Additionally, Ecoinside assumes full financing with its own capital and does not manage the charging points once they are installed.

Thanks to this model, it can present competitive offers tailored to the specific criteria of each tender.

Finally, the company also has an agreement with Águas de Portugal, reinforcing its position at the national level.

A Business Model Focused on Public Areas and Car Parks

With an expanding network, Cunha Pereira emphasises that Ecoinside takes a strategic approach to the installation of its chargers.

“Our goal is not to be the largest CPO in Portugal, but to identify opportunities where we can offer excellent service to electric vehicle owners,” he says.

Their efforts are focused both on charging points in public spaces, near residential and work areas, and on accessible private car parks, such as those located in supermarkets and hotels.

The company has also formed partnerships with private companies, allowing it to expand its network of chargers through mutually beneficial agreements.

“We seek agreements with private sector entities to offer charging services to their customers,” Pereira adds.

2025 Goal: Doubling the Infrastructure

Ecoinside has ambitious plans for the coming years. The executive highlighted that by 2025, the company aims to double the number of operational electric vehicle charging stations.

“Currently, we have around 150 charging points in operation or in the process of installation. We want to reach 300,” states the co-CEO.

Although the focus is not solely on quantity, the growth of the charging network aligns with sustainable mobility trends and the growing demand for electric vehicles across the country.

Opportunities in Self-Generated Electricity

The combination of renewable energy and energy storage is seen as a way to ensure the self-sufficiency of their charging stations, which would be a significant step for the country’s energy transition.

“It is important to share an opportunity that exists across Europe and one that I hope will also be realised in Portugal in the near future: self-generation of electricity for EV charging,” he states.

“One of the challenges is the energy grid and how much power can be delivered in specific locations, so we are looking into this opportunity, as we have internal knowledge in renewable energy,” concludes Cunha Pereira.
