EDP to Strengthen National Public Network After Breaking Charging Records in 2024

EDP secures Mobi.e public tender to install and operate 190 public charging points across 45 municipalities, expanding the availability of chargers from north to south Portugal. The company continues to invest in electric mobility following record-breaking figures in 2024.

The year 2024 set new records for the growth of electric mobility in the Iberian Peninsula. For the public network managed by EDP Comercial, one of the leading companies in this segment, the number of charging sessions reached a historic peak, surpassing one million sessions.

The company already has more than 6,000 contracted charging points, with 3,400 located in Portugal—covering all districts—and over 2,700 in Spain.

In Portugal alone, charging sessions approached the one-million mark, reflecting a growth of approximately 40% compared to 2023 and a sustained increase since 2018, when EDP began consistently investing in electric mobility.

These sessions enabled electric vehicles to travel 140 million kilometres in Portugal, equivalent to driving around the Earth 3,500 times, while avoiding the emission of 20,000 tonnes of COâ‚‚ compared to internal combustion vehicles.

Strategic Partnerships Boost Public Charging Usage The increased use of EDP’s public charging network has been driven by new partnerships with strategically located businesses. These include over:

  • 650 charging points at ALDI supermarkets,
  • 180 points at Burger King restaurants,
  • 42 points at Decathlon stores, and
  • 60 points at Staples stores.

Additionally, the company has enhanced the charging infrastructure along key national highways, introducing fast and ultra-fast chargers on the North and South highways.

Mobi.e Tender Success: EDP Expands National Charging Infrastructure In 2025, after reducing the cost of charging on the public network by 5%, EDP further cemented its leadership by winning the Mobi.e public tender.

This latest tender, organized by Portugal’s public charging network operator, enables EDP to install new chargers in residential areas across 45 municipalities in 16 districts.

Under this agreement, EDP will install and operate 190 charging points in 2025, representing approximately 60% of the tendered infrastructure. The chargers, with a capacity of 22 kW, can be used with any CEME card (Electric Mobility Electricity Provider) or mobility apps like EDP Charge.

By securing these additional points distributed nationwide, EDP reinforces its commitment to expanding the public charging infrastructure, ensuring greater convenience for EV drivers, particularly those without private garages or parking spaces.

A Long-Term Commitment to Electric Mobility “The adoption of electric mobility is undeniable, with sustained growth in both Portugal and Spain,” notes Carlos Moreira, Director of EDP Comercial responsible for mobility.

“Investment is essential to ensure that this remains a sustainable, economical, and convenient option for drivers. Expanding the network must remain a priority for both public and private mobility players, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the country with solutions tailored to diverse driver needs. EDP is determined to lead this transformation, actively contributing to a more sustainable and innovative future.”

Pioneering Public Charging in Portugal This marks the third Mobi.e public tender awarded to EDP, following tenders in 2019 and 2020, which granted the company 420 charging points.

A pioneer in developing Portugal’s public charging network, EDP has completed over 2.1 million charging sessions on its public network since it began investing in electric mobility. These sessions enabled vehicles to travel over 260 million kilometres using only electricity, preventing more than 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

EDP continues to position itself as a key player in Portugal’s electric mobility sector, with 3,400 charging points under contract, ensuring comprehensive coverage in all districts across the country.
