Electric car sales in Germany fell by 29% to around 31,397 units

This marks the second consecutive decline in new registrations for this type of propulsion, according to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in Germany fell by 28.9 per cent in March, to around 31,397 units, reaching a market share of 11.9 per cent.

This marks the second consecutive decline in new registrations for this type of propulsion, according to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Thus, the passenger car and SUV market in the country reached 263,844 registered units in March, which is 6.2 per cent less than in the same month of 2023.

Year-to-date registrations in Germany stand at 694,785 units, representing a 4.2 per cent increase compared to the figures recorded in the first quarter of the previous year.

Additionally, 16,094 units corresponded to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), representing a 4.5 per cent decrease in March compared to the same month in 2023.

Meanwhile, sales of petrol-powered cars decreased by 3.4 per cent in the third month of the year, to 99,733 units, making it the most sold propulsion type in the month with a market share of 37.8 per cent.

By brands, Volkswagen once again positioned itself as the brand with the most sales in the German market in March, with 48,180 units, a 3.4 per cent decrease year-on-year, followed by Mercedes-Benz, with 21,706 cars (-22.8 per cent), and BMW, with 21,366 vehicles sold (+0.6 per cent).

In the cumulative total for the first three months of the year, Volkswagen also ranked as the most popular brand among Germans, with 130,089 units (+2.8 per cent year-on-year).

Mercedes-Benz took second place with 63,099 units, down 11.4 per cent, and BMW rounded out the top three with 53,549 cars (+13.2 per cent).

Alongside the drop in sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV), Tesla also saw a decline, with registrations in March in Germany falling by 55.4 per cent compared to the same month in 2023, amounting to 3,878 units.

In the first three months of 2024, Tesla has registered 13,068 cars, representing a decrease of 36.7 per cent.

Conversely, Seat/Cupra’s sales increased by 21.7 per cent last month in Germany, reaching 14,253 units, with a 5.4 per cent market share overall.

Between January and March, the Spanish brand has registered 36,084 cars, a 42 per cent increase and a 5.2 per cent market share.
