As part of its “Ecological Conversion 2030” initiative, the Vatican City State will integrate 14 new electric vehicles into its official fleet. These will be operated by the Gendarmerie, fire brigade, and other state departments.
According to the announcement, this delivery is part of a long-term environmental strategy aimed at achieving a fully electric fleet by 2030.
The vehicles were supplied by Italian manufacturer Exelentia. The batch includes four Melex passenger vehicles for the Gendarmerie and ten Goupil utility vehicles for various administrative purposes.

Additionally, Exelentia will donate two more vehicles, specially modified to meet papal requirements.
The first four Melex 343 units, two of which will be assigned to the fire brigade, will be officially handed over on April 16 in the square in front of the Governorate building.
The Melex 343 is a compact, fully electric vehicle, designed for use in historic centers and high-footfall areas. It can also be equipped to carry emergency and rescue equipment.
The plan includes a broader effort to expand the charging infrastructure. On December 20, 2024, the Vatican installed 20 fast-charging points across ten stations, along with two ultra-fast chargers near the entrance of Paul VI Audience Hall.
In addition, the Vatican is investing in renewable energy projects. A new photovoltaic glass canopy was inaugurated in December above the “Cortile delle Corazze”, next to the Vatican Museums.
