EV market in Italy grows 82% with over 29,000 units registered in four months

Over 29,000 fully electric cars were registered between January and April. However, the country still lags behind major European markets.

Electric vehicle registrations continue to increase in Italy. In April 2025 alone, 6,646 BEVs were registered, marking a 110.38% rise compared to April 2024.

Market share reached 4.76%, up from 2.32% in the same month last year.

In the first four months of 2025, 29,668 fully electric vehicles were registered, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 82.22%. The corresponding market share stood at 5.07%, up from 2.76% in January–April 2024. As of 30 April, the Italian EV fleet included 303,924 vehicles.

Considering all powertrains, the overall Italian car market grew by 2.64% in April, with 139,672 units registered. However, total registrations in the first four months remained slightly negative, down 0.6% at 585,500 units.

According to the latest available data from March 2025, electric vehicle market shares reached 18.18% in France, 17.01% in Germany, 6.98% in Spain, and 20.75% in the United Kingdom. In the same month, Italy’s share was 5.17%.

Fabio Pressi, President of Motus-E, stated that “the BEV market in Italy remains small but shows encouraging signs despite the absence of demand incentives”.

He added that “growth is driven by entry-level models, although the offering remains limited in segments A and particularly B when compared to traditional or hybrid options”.

Pressi also emphasised that “surpassing 300,000 electric cars on the road is a milestone, but without a comprehensive plan, especially targeting fleets and vulnerable private users, it will be impossible to meet the 2030 PNIEC targets”.

Regarding commercial vehicles, electric models now exceed a 3.3% market share, with vehicles over 3.5 tonnes already surpassing the total volumes recorded in all of 2024 during the first four months of 2025.

Finally, Pressi highlighted that “Germany exceeded 113,000 BEV registrations in the first four months, overtaking diesel vehicles for the first time without an incentive scheme — a historic result”. He concluded that “Italy is falling behind, but with vision, determination and industrial policy, the gap can be closed”.
