Fastned, recognised as the UK’s top-rated ultra-rapid EV charging network by What Car? and Zap Map, has launched Northern Ireland’s fastest EV charging hub in Banbridge.
This multi-million-pound investment strengthens the region’s limited ultra-rapid charging infrastructure, with a second hub set to open in Antrim in March.
The new 400kW charging hub in Banbridge, the company’s first in Northern Ireland, features 12 ultra-rapid bays, capable of delivering up to 100 miles of charge in just five minutes, using 100% renewable energy. Fastned has committed over £3 million to the development of both hubs, identifying Northern Ireland as a strategic growth area due to rising EV adoption.
Currently, ultra-rapid chargers represent only 4.5% of Northern Ireland’s total 687 public chargers, serving nearly 23,000 EV drivers. Fastned aims to accelerate the UK’s transition to electric mobility but warns that grid connection delays are hampering expansion. High-capacity connections are essential for ultra-rapid hubs, yet lengthy approval processes are slowing progress, impacting driver confidence and limiting charging options.
“Northern Ireland urgently needs more reliable ultra-rapid charging infrastructure. Our Banbridge hub is a game-changer for EV drivers, and we are excited to expand further in the region,” says Tom Hurst, UK & Ireland Country Director at Fastned.
The Electric Vehicle Association Northern Ireland has welcomed Fastned’s entry into the market, recognising Banbridge’s prime location on the Belfast-Dublin corridor.
“This hub provides a super-fast boost for EV drivers on a key transport route and is a vital step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future,” says Mark McCall, Chair of EVA NI.
As the UK targets 300,000 public chargers by 2030, Fastned calls for a faster grid connection process to enable further investment and expansion in Northern Ireland’s charging network.
