Fastned launches ultra-rapid charging station on Scotland’s west coast

The company opens a new charging hub in Greenock, featuring four 400kW chargers and expansion potential, aiming to strengthen infrastructure in an area with limited ultra-rapid charging availability.

Fastned, the European electric vehicle (EV) charging network operator, has inaugurated a new ultra-rapid charging hub in Greenock, a town located west of Glasgow, Scotland.

The site is initially equipped with four chargers of up to 400kW, with the potential to expand to eight in the future.

The charging station is strategically positioned at the roundabout connecting Main Street and Rue End Street, serving as a key location for those travelling along Scotland’s west coast.

According to the company statement, the hub provides a crucial solution for local EV drivers and tourists, especially during the high-demand summer season.

The chargers are powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity and can deliver up to 100 miles of range in just five minutes, allowing users to continue their journeys swiftly and efficiently. This development forms part of Fastned’s broader UK expansion strategy, with the network now operating 33 charging stations nationwide.

This opening marks Fastned’s third site in western Scotland and its fifth across the country. The company is working to provide coverage in regions where ultra-rapid charging infrastructure remains scarce.

Fastned’s stations are known for their distinctive design, featuring a highly visible solar canopy. This not only offers weather protection during charging but also helps drivers locate the station easily. The structure also reflects the firm’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

The reliability and user-friendliness of the equipment are key aspects of Fastned’s service. The company offers multiple payment options to ensure a seamless experience, including for those who are passing through and require a fast, hassle-free recharge.

“We are pleased to open our fifth charging hub in Scotland, addressing the need for ultra-rapid charging in a region where options are limited,” said Tom Hurst, UK Country Manager at Fastned.

“We will continue to expand our network to support the shift to electric mobility,” he added.

Since its founding in 2012, Fastned has been developing a network of fast charging stations across Europe. The company is listed on Euronext Amsterdam (AMS: FAST) and holds B Corp certification, recognising its commitment to high social and environmental standards.

The deployment of hubs like the one in Greenock aligns with the growing need for infrastructure that supports widespread EV adoption, both in urban centres and on intercity routes. With this launch, Fastned strengthens its footprint in the UK and advances its mission to enable sustainable transport across the continent.
