FIAP, Motus-E and UNIONTRASPORTI to identify strategic areas for truck charging

The three associations signed a framework agreement to develop a dedicated electric charging network for heavy-duty vehicles across key routes in Italy.

On May 28, 2025, FIAP, Motus-E and UNIONTRASPORTI signed a framework agreement aimed at accelerating the deployment of electric charging infrastructure for heavy-duty trucks along Italy’s main transport corridors.

The agreement initiates a joint study to identify strategic areas for installing electric charging stations dedicated to freight transport vehicles.

By combining the expertise of the three organizations, the collaboration will enable the identification of the most suitable sites for the installation of charging points.

The selection will be based on freight traffic data, including origin, destination and stop patterns, client needs, and existing electrical infrastructure.

Consideration will also be given to the distribution of industrial activities and high-traffic rest areas throughout the country.

In addition to carrying out the study, the signatories will jointly promote the results through appropriate channels to inform and raise awareness among public institutions and industry stakeholders.

“The sustainable evolution of freight transport cannot be separated from the development of a widespread charging infrastructure tailored to the operational needs of businesses,” said Alessandro Peron, Secretary General of FIAP.

“This agreement marks a step in the right direction: combining strategic vision, real data and cooperation among key players is the best way to guide the sector through the energy transition without undermining its competitiveness.”

Francesco Naso, Secretary General of Motus-E, added: “Electrification is becoming an increasingly attractive option for freight operators. Developing a dedicated charging network through strategic and coordinated planning is a key enabling factor. Agreements like the one signed today are essential for Italy to seize the industrial opportunities arising from major ongoing technological transitions.”

Antonello Fontanili, Director of Uniontrasporti, commented: “Equipping our road and motorway infrastructure with electric charging stations dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles is a fundamental step towards the energy and environmental transition of freight transport.”

He further explained: “However, to ensure that the project is both effective and economically sustainable, it is necessary to engage with operators and conduct in-depth analyses, an area in which Uniontrasporti is proud to contribute, given its expertise and close ties with the Italian Chamber of Commerce system.”
