Firenze accelerates its eMobility transition with a plan to install 350 charging points

The Italian city is preparing to double its charging infrastructure, replace outdated stations, and introduce cutting-edge technology as part of its effort to lead the transition to sustainable mobility.

Firenze is set to undergo a significant transformation in its electric mobility landscape. In recent days, a new charging station bearing Eni’s iconic six-legged dog logo was installed in the Piazza Puccini area, marking the start of an ambitious plan to expand its electric infrastructure.

According to Andrea Giorgio, the city’s Mobility Officer, 20 additional stations will be installed by the end of January, with a total goal of 350 active charging points by 2026.

The project involves both replacing outdated stations and installing new ones in key areas across the city. Firenze currently has 170 municipal stations, a figure set to double under this plan.

Once private stations and the dual-connection capacity of public stations are factored in, residents will have access to more than 700 charging points.

State-of-the-art technology for a city in transition

The new system will be managed by Be Charge, part of the Be Power group and Eni Plenitude, which will operate the network for the next ten years. In the city center, low-power stations (6 kW) will be replaced with higher-capacity units:

  • 116 stations with a capacity of up to 22 kW.
  • 130 stations capable of delivering between 50 and 60 kW.
  • 20 stations offering up to 100 kW, reducing charging times for electric vehicles to 2–4 hours.

Additionally, five ultra-fast charging hubs with capacities of up to 300 kW will be installed, enabling vehicles to charge in just 15–30 minutes.

These hubs will be strategically located at sites such as the Viale della Quiete parking lot in Careggi, near the airport at Via Gemignani, and key access points to the A1 motorway and the Fi-PI-LI.

Progressive infrastructure and enhanced signage

To date, the city council has formally approved the installation of 78 stations. The expansion will be rolled out gradually to avoid overwhelming the city with construction projects.

The plan also includes new, highly visible signage at charging points, designed to prevent unauthorized parking and ensure exclusive access for electric vehicles.

The evolution of charging stations in Firenze has been remarkable. In 1998, the city had just 15 stations. By 2010, the number had grown to 107, reaching 173 by 2016. With a target of 350 stations by 2026, Florence is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable mobility in Italy.

A commitment to the future

“This initiative aims not only to support electric vehicle owners but also to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable city,” noted Andrea Giorgio. He emphasized that the gradual implementation of the plan will ensure both resource optimization and minimal disruptions to urban traffic.

Through this modernization effort, Firenze is not only facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles but also reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, setting an example for other cities looking to lead the eMobility transition.
