The urban transport industry in Italy has taken a significant step towards sustainability in 2024, with over 1,000 electric buses (BEVs) registered.
This milestone marks a 162% growth compared to the previous year.
According to ANFIA, 1,026 electric buses were registered in 2024, a significant increase from the 391 registered in the previous year.
While diesel buses remain market leaders with 1,740 units registered, their share has dropped by 25% compared to 2023.
Additionally, hybrid (772) and compressed natural gas (1,246) buses have gained prominence, with increases of 34% and 76%, respectively.
Segment growth: urban buses lead the charge
An analysis by segment shows that urban buses are the main drivers of this shift.
This sector registered 2,439 units in 2024, a 74% increase from 2023, accounting for 49.5% of the market and cementing its role as a key player in electrification.
In contrast, interurban buses experienced a 16% decline, with 1,791 registrations, while the tourism sector saw a 24% increase, with 651 units recorded.
Iveco leads, Solaris shines in electrics
Iveco Bus continues to lead the market with 2,017 registrations in 2024, representing 41% of the total market. This reflects a 12% growth in registrations compared to 2023, where 1,804 units were recorded.
Mercedes experienced a decline in registrations, dropping from 716 units in 2023 to 608 in 2024, marking a 15% decrease. Its market share also fell from 17.4% to 12.4%.
Solaris recorded a 240% increase in registrations, rising from 162 units in 2023 to 551 units in 2024.
This growth positions Solaris as a leading player, achieving an 11% market share in 2024, up from 4% the previous year.
Similarly, Menarinibus showed remarkable progress, with a 418% increase in registrations, from 55 units in 2023 to 285 in 2024. Its market share rose to 5.8%, marking a significant gain of 4.5 percentage points.
Otokar achieved impressive growth, registering 285 units in 2024, a 213% increase from the 91 units recorded the previous year. This propelled its market share to 5.8%, up from 2.2% in 2023.
Setra faced the steepest decline, with registrations dropping by 50% from 227 units in 2023 to 112 in 2024. This corresponded to a market share reduction of 3.2 percentage points, from 5.5% to 2.3%.
Other notable manufacturers include Karsan, which achieved a 122% increase in registrations (44 units in 2023 to 98 in 2024), and Isuzu, which grew by 30%. These emerging players are gaining ground as the market diversifies.
