ABB E-mobility’s new charger C50 has officially arrived in Italy, where Edison Next has installed the country’s first C50 chargers at Il Castagno, a premium shopping destination near the Adriatic coast.
Here, Il Castagno provides an ideal setting where visitors can conveniently charge their vehicles while enjoying an exclusive shopping experience.
This makes it a fitting use case for the C50, which was specifically developed for retail and destination charging.
“This installation is exactly what our C50 was designed for: delivering a premium charging experience in retail locations,” said Daniele Malorgio Giaffreda, National Sales Manager at ABB E-mobility.
“In these environments, where usability, aesthetics, and seamless customer experience are key, the C50 shows its full strength. We’re excited to see it in action here at Il Castagno and look forward to deepening our partnership with Edison Next as we continue advancing e-mobility in Italy.”
More than just a charger, the C50 is an extension of the customer journey.
Its ultra-slim 235 mm profile supports flexible installation even in space-constrained locations, while its 50-kW power output, which can be shared to two outlets, ensures efficient charging during typical retail visits.
The 21.5” high-resolution touchscreen with a customizable Human-Machine Interface (HMI) gives opera-tors the flexibility to personalize the user experience. From real-time charging updates and pricing to idle status messages, the interface is designed for clarity and engagement.
A fully integrated payment system streamlines the transaction process for drivers.
In addition, retailers and charge point operators (CPOs) can tailor the charger’s look and feel to match their brand with custom colors, logos, QR codes, and branded outro screens. The optional loyalty program integration further enhances the user experience while supporting the core business.
Giving Concrete Form to New Charging Experiences in Retail
The installation at Il Castagno is the result of a collaboration between ABB E-mobility and Edison Next, part of the Edison Group, which supports clients and regions on their path toward decarbonization and ecological transition and is strongly committed to developing sustainable mobility solutions.
To help scale EV infrastructure across Italy, Edison Next is involved in several national and European sustainability initiatives.
Through the PNRR (Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF)) and the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) program – a European Commission effort to advance green mobility – ABB E-mobility and Edison Next are jointly deploying ultra-fast sites along key motorway corridors. T
hese include chargers with up to 100 kW at urban locations and chargers with up to 360 kW on extra-urban sites. This initiative is part of a broader plan to expand the electric charging network that Edison Next is implementing.
The plan includes the construction, maintenance and management of more than 400 ultra-fast and fast charging points for electric passenger vehicles and for electric logistics trucks across highways, extra-urban roads and urban centers in Italy.
The C50 chargers at Il Castagno are powered with 100% renewable energy, consistent with all chargers operated by Edison Next, reinforcing a shared vision for sustainable mobility.
“The new C50 charger represents a step forward in the technological evolution of EV infrastructure, well suited for both quick top-ups for light commercial vehicles in logistics and for the retail sector’s needs,” said Marco Carvelli, Head of E-Mobility at Edison Next.
“In the retail sector, in particular, it allows vehicles to recharge during the time available while shopping and offers a user interface that enables an intuitive experience and helps unlock the full potential of sustainable mobility”.
