MOBI.E launched an international tender this month for the installation and operation of a total of 156 electric vehicle charging stations, located in 62 municipalities, selected as part of the first phase of the “Electric Streets” project.
The initiative has a budget of two million euros, which was nearly exhausted in this first phase, and aims to equip urban areas with charging stations, particularly on streets where residential or commercial buildings lack private parking.
In this way, users without private parking will be able to benefit from longer charging periods, designed to minimise the impact on the electrical grid and reduce costs.
A total of 66 lots are up for tender, each consisting of between two and six charging stations to be installed on the same street.
In the municipalities of Coimbra, Guimarães, Odivelas, and Oeiras, two lots were validated, while in the others, only one was approved.
Each station will have a power output of 22 kilowatts, with two charging points, and must accept an electronic payment method.
The “Electric Streets” project began on 5 April when MOBI.E issued a notice inviting Portuguese municipalities to express interest by suggesting one or two streets (in the case of larger municipalities) where charging stations could be installed.
The response from municipalities was overwhelming, culminating in the validation of 66 lots now up for tender.
“MOBI.E aims to open a new front in network coverage, creating experimental starting conditions to offer the growing number of electric vehicle users public charging solutions in areas where private spaces are not an option,” says Luís Barroso, President of MOBI.E.
Proposals from Charging Point Operators (CPOs) must be submitted via the acinGov public procurement platform by 11 September.
The stations are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
