Electric cars reached a new milestone in Norway as battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) represented 98.3% of new registrations in September.
According to the Norwegian Road Administration (OFV), 14,084 fully electric cars were registered last month, out of a total of 14,329 new passenger vehicles.
This marks the highest monthly share of BEVs ever recorded in the country.
Only 245 new cars registered in September had a combustion or hybrid powertrain, meaning petrol, diesel, and hybrid models accounted for just 1.7% of the market — the lowest share on record.
“This shows that we are well on our way to achieving our zero vision, whereby all new passenger cars in 2025 will be zero-emission vehicles. Pure petrol and diesel cars are on their way to being phased out,” states Geir Inge Stokke, Director of the OFV.
“Now it is important to get vans and lorries moving in the same direction,” he adds.
In terms of fuel type distribution, diesel cars represented 105 units or 0.7% of the market.
Plug-in petrol hybrids accounted for 58 registrations (0.4%), followed by petrol hybrids (30 units / 0.2%), diesel plug-in hybrids (27 / 0.2%), and pure petrol models (25 / 0.2%).
Despite the already high level of electrification, new car registrations increased overall.
A total of 14,329 passenger cars were registered in September, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 10%.
From January to September, 113,325 new cars were registered, up 23.5% compared to the same period in 2024. Of these, 95% were electric vehicles — also a record figure.
Favourite electric models
The Tesla Model Y remained the most registered model with 4,132 units and a 28.8% market share.
It was followed by the Tesla Model 3 (696 units) and the Volvo EX30 (581 units).
Together, the two Tesla models held a combined market share of 33.7%.
How is van electrification progressing?
Electrification of the van segment is progressing more slowly but continues to advance.
In September, 2,889 new vans were registered, a 51% increase compared to the same month in 2024.
Of these, 43% were electric — up from 23% in September last year. Year-to-date, electric vans account for an average of 45% of total van registrations.
