According to data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (OFV), 7,893 electric cars were registered in Norway in May.

These figures represent 2,158 units fewer than in April and 2,880 fewer than in the same month of 2023.

The proportion of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in new passenger car registrations fell from 80.8 to 77.0 per cent compared to May last year. It also fell compared to April, when the figure was 89.4 per cent.

But it wasn’t just the number of electric car registrations that fell; decreases were seen across all segments.

A total of 10,253 new units were registered across all types of propulsion, a figure that is 23.2 per cent lower than the previous year.

However, it is worth noting that new electric vehicle registrations fell more sharply, by 26.7 per cent.

It is important to remember that in April 2024, 11,241 new cars were registered, of which more than 10,000 were purely electric.

However, this also means that in May, 23 per cent of all new registrations in Norway, or 2,360 vehicles, had a combustion engine on board.

Furthermore, the decline in plug-in hybrids observed in previous months has continued, with 544 PHEVs, a 50.2 per cent decrease from May 2023.

Therefore, the market share of PHEVs in May 2024 was only 5.3 per cent.

So far this year, part-time electric vehicle registrations have fallen by 64.8 per cent, and the market share has reduced to 2.7 per cent.

In contrast, full hybrids, with 1,250 units, achieved a 20 per cent increase.

Pure diesel engines also stood out with 437 units and a market share of 4.3 per cent (3.0 per cent so far this year).

Finally, petrol models remained at their usual level with 129 units and a market share of 1.3 per cent.

Which were the best-selling models in Norway?

The Volvo EX30 led with 791 new registrations in May, followed by the VW ID.4 with 741 units, and the Tesla Model Y with 690.

In fourth place was the hybrid model Toyota Yaris with 609 new registrations.

The fifth spot was occupied by another hybrid SUV, the RAV4, with 441 units, followed by the electric Toyota bZ4X with 427 new registrations and the compact hybrid Corolla with 311.

It is worth mentioning that Toyota achieved a good result in May, surpassing models such as the Polestar 2 (333), VW ID.3 (331), MG4 (317), Hyundai Kona (308), and Audi Q4 e-tron (306).

In contrast, the Skoda Enyaq, which in 2023 was still in the top spot along with the Model Y and the ID.4, only achieved 122 new registrations.
