The construction of PowerCo‘s (Volkswagen Group) battery cell gigafactory is progressing “full speed ahead to accelerate execution,” with foundational work and the placement of the first pillars set to begin in the autumn.
The plant is expected to start operations in 2026 with around 1,500 workers.
This was highlighted on Thursday during a visit to the site by the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, alongside PowerCo’s CFO, Javier Rivera.
Also in attendance were the new CEO of PowerCo Spain, Andreas Rottmann, the Minister for Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, and the Mayor of Sagunt (Valencia), Darío Moreno.
PowerCo’s Chief Financial Officer explained that preliminary structures have been completed and infrastructure work for drainage and water channelling is “in full execution phase.”
From the autumn, the first pillars will be visible, changing “the skyline of the area,” he noted.
The foundation work is currently out for tender, and concrete prefabrications, mostly awarded to a company in Buñol (Valencia), have already been allocated.
Carlos Mazón emphasised the “historic investment of over 600 million euros” made by the regional government in the area, including the intermodal station and the Battery Campus, among other projects.
