Powerdot, the leading independent operator of electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Europe, specialising in destination charging, has reported a significant rise in the use of its stations in Spain during the summer months of 2024.
Company data indicates that EV charges on its network in July and August increased by 88% compared to May and June, surpassing the 75% growth recorded by the market average according to data from Electromaps.
This growth reflects not only a shift in the habits of Spanish drivers but also the growing acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable option for summer travel.
The increase was particularly significant in regions such as Cantabria, Catalonia, and the Community of Madrid, where charges doubled compared to other times of the year.
Laura Goncalves, Managing Director of Powerdot in Spain, explains that “compared to July and August last year, this year, charges have more than doubled, which is partly due to the expansion of our charging points but also to greater utilisation of them.”
In fact, the CPO recorded an increase in the average utilisation of chargers of over 35% compared to the previous year.
The growth observed by the company this summer has been driven by an increase in the travel of Spanish holidaymakers, as well as a higher number of foreign users, thanks to the company’s European exposure.
The company saw a 77% increase in energy consumption per charger in its network compared to the same period in 2023.
“This growth in electric mobility reinforces our mission to provide a convenient and reliable charging experience for everyone,” adds Goncalves.
According to the 2023 Electric Mobility Yearbook by AEDIVE, sales of electric and plug-in vehicles in Spain grew by 39% in 2023, demonstrating that more and more people are opting for this type of vehicle.
Currently, Powerdot operates over 8,065 charging points at 1,700 locations across Europe and plans to reach over 3,000 locations by 2026 in countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Poland.
In Spain, Powerdot intends to invest 30 million euros by 2025 to continue expanding its charging infrastructure and support the growing demand for electric vehicles.
