In 2023, the proportion of battery-powered electric vehicles reached a 14.6% share of new registrations.
This marks a continuation of the increases recorded in recent years on the path to adopting electric mobility within the bloc.
Indeed, this proportion of pure electric vehicles among new registrations remained below 1% until 2018, before growing “notably” over the past four years, reaching 5.3% in 2020, 9% in 2021, 12.1% in 2022, and 14.6% in 2023.
Scandinavian countries continue to lead the rankings for electric vehicle registrations in 2023.
In Denmark, battery-powered electric vehicles accounted for 7.1% of all passenger cars sold, with similarly high percentages observed in Sweden (5.9%), Luxembourg (5.1%), and the Netherlands (5.0%).
Conversely, 14 countries recorded shares below 1%, with the lowest figures reported in Cyprus, Greece, and Poland, each at 0.2%.
Spain is included in this group, as the rate of electric vehicles sold was 0.56% in 2023, just two-tenths higher than the previous year.
