Rome’s New Rules Energise EV Charging at Petrol Stations

Rome takes a decisive step toward sustainable mobility by integrating EV charging infrastructure at fuel stations, simplifying regulations and improving urban accessibility.

Rome is accelerating its electric mobility efforts. A newly approved regulation allows for the integration of EV charging stations at petrol stations, paving the way for a wider and more accessible charging network.

By amending its Municipal Fuel Plan, Rome is becoming a more connected, sustainable, and convenient city, well-prepared to meet the rising demand for electric mobility.

This initiative directly contributes to national and European energy transition goals.

The resolution, introduced by Councillor for Productive Activities and Equal Opportunities Monica Lucarelli and Urban Planning Councillor Maurizio Veloccia, received approval from the City Council and was ratified yesterday by the Capitol Assembly.

It permits the installation of charging stations within petrol station grounds, without counting them towards the total gross floor area.

This measure is set to ensure a more extensive charging network throughout the city, making it more practical and convenient for citizens to opt for electric vehicles.

In addition, the new regulation is expected to make Rome more competitive and innovative, drawing new investments while enhancing the quality of life for residents, workers, and visitors.

Lucarelli emphasised the broader significance of this decision: “This resolution marks a decisive step in our commitment to building a greener, more innovative, and sustainable Rome. Simplifying the installation of charging stations at petrol stations not only eases daily life for citizens but also promotes a development model that drives economic growth and reduces emissions. By adapting regulations to modern urban challenges, we are steering the city toward electric mobility as a tangible catalyst for positive, long-term change.”

“The energy transition is a responsibility that involves everyone,” Lucarelli continued.

“Today’s step forward will make Rome more competitive and better equipped to face future challenges. Strengthening the charging network improves urban mobility and attracts new investments, establishing Rome as a model of innovation. This initiative will positively impact quality of life, making our city greener, more liveable, and more accessible—for all Romans and for generations to come.”

The regulation also streamlines approval procedures, cutting wait times for investors and providing a clearer, more supportive regulatory framework for developing charging infrastructure.
