The Scottish Government has announced a further investment of up to 40 million pounds through the second Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZEB2).
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop says: “Since 2020, we have invested over 154 million pounds in zero-emission buses and infrastructure, and this new funding is aimed at helping more operators to make the switch.”
It is estimated that this investment could bring as many as 300 zero-emission vehicles to Scotland’s bus operators.
This latest investment builds on the success of the ScotZEB scheme to date, which has already delivered hundreds of zero-emission buses and coaches across the Nation.
Twinned with this investment, the Government is currently examining options for a regulatory approach, to apply from a date no earlier than 2030, to further support the phased uptake of zero emission buses.
This would contribute significantly to reducing the emissions from heavy duty vehicles and encourage more passengers to choose bus as a sustainable public transport option.
As the final round of funding to support large operators to transition their vehicles, the ScotZEB 2 investment will help reduce transport emissions and support a just transition to a net zero transport system.
Hyslop says: “By supporting collaborative projects and shared infrastructure, we’re ensuring that the benefits of decarbonisation reach every corner of Scotland from city centres to rural communities.”
“ScotZEB2 has exemplified how government and industry can work together to deliver sustainable, inclusive transport solutions. The programme is not only reducing emissions – it’s supporting jobs, connecting communities, improving air quality, and continuing to build a cleaner, greener Scotland,” she adds.
