Shell announces the construction of Germany’s most powerful test centre for charging infrastructure, setting new standards in the research, development and testing of megawatt charging.
Located at the Shell Technology Centre Hamburg, the facility is designed for charging capacities of up to five megawatts (MW) in the medium-voltage range.
It will enable rapid charging of batteries for heavy-duty electric vehicles such as lorries, buses, tractors and construction machinery – as well as electric-powered ships – under a wide range of conditions, including extreme climates.
The facility will also test the interaction of different hardware and software components under real-world conditions.
Initial testing is scheduled to begin by the end of 2025.
Felix Faber, Chair of the Management Board of Shell in Germany, says:”With the construction of the most powerful test centre for electric heavy-duty vehicles and infrastructure, we are pioneers in the industry. This facility enables us to play a key role in supporting the transport sector’s efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions while maintaining competitiveness.”
“Fast and efficient charging is crucial in the transport sector, where time is money. That’s exactly where our megawatt charging test centre comes in. Here, solutions can be refined, industrial partners can collaborate, and together we can contribute to the electrification and decarbonisation of the entire sector.”
The test centre not only advances the development of Shell’s own e-mobility products and services – such as those provided by its subsidiary SBRS in the field of electric depot solutions for bus and lorry fleets, or by ubitricity and Shell Recharge for individual mobility and passenger vehicle fleets – but also serves as a resource for partners and customers including vehicle and charging infrastructure manufacturers.
With 12 automated test benches, more than 50 flexible testing stations, climate chambers, and a wide range of configurations, clients can test and optimise their concepts in terms of power, efficiency, safety and real-world suitability under varied conditions and simulations.
The project complements Shell’s wider commitment to shaping and advancing e-mobility through infrastructure, innovation and competitive, scalable solutions.
The Shell Technology Centre Hamburg thus further strengthens its position as a globally leading competence hub for e-mobility within the Shell Group.
