Shell has opened its first electric public charging station in the United Kingdom (UK) for trucks, at the Markham Moor Truck Stop in Nottinghamshire.

The site – which Shell acquired in 2022 – is situated along the A1, about 25 miles south of Doncaster and 25 miles Southeast of Sheffield and is passed by more than 8,000 heavy goods vehicle (HGVs) a day.

It features a 400 kilowatt-hour (kWh) fast charging station, with two connectors, powered using 100 per cent renewable electricity, and which enables two vehicles to charge at once.

Shell has also introduced a book and charge system that allows fleet managers to secure charging bays in advance, allowing fleets to guarantee the availability of chargers and to reliably plan and schedule stops, reducing driver downtime.

The charge points are integrated with the Shell Recharge app that allows customers to monitor and manage charging sessions in real-time.

Drivers can also use a single Shell Card for all their refuelling and charging needs, simplifying payments.

While their trucks charge, drivers can use amenities including a café, 24/7 toilets, showers, and guarded parking.

Euan Moir, Head of UK Fleet Solutions at Shell, said the opening marks an important step in supporting the transition to electric heavy goods vehicles.

“The future of commercial road transport will look mostly electric. That electric future is already coming to fruition in the UK,” Moir stated.

“Providing a seamless charging experience for drivers at Shell Markham Moor is another step in helping transport companies continue to operate efficiently during the energy transition,” he added.
