Swedavia signs an agreement with Virta to manage 800 charging points at Swedish airports

The partnership is a response to the growing demand for more efficient infrastructure for EVs. Through the collaboration with Virta, Swedavia can ensure charging capacity for all EV-driving travelers' needs.

Swedavia will connect 800 charging points at airports including Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg Landvetter and Malmö Airport to Virta’s platform, Virta Hub.

The connection will enable seamless management of electric vehicle (EV) charging, use of smart energy services, flexible billing and other features essential to running profitable charging stations.

The partnership is a response to the growing demand for more efficient infrastructure for EVs and enables Swedavia to optimise its charging network.

The new model for EV charging will offer a more efficient and user-friendly experience for drivers.

In addition, Swedavia is for the first time implementing a charging payment system, previously included in parking fees, to make it transparent and easy to use for all EV drivers.

Through the collaboration with Virta, Swedavia can ensure charging capacity for all EV-driving travelers’ needs.

Virta’s advanced energy management capabilities make it possible to scale up and add more chargers without requiring major upgrades to the existing electrical connection, providing flexibility and future-proof capacity at all Swedavia’s airports.

“There is a growing demand for scalable and efficient solutions for electric vehicles at airports,” says Martin Lundgren, Country Director, Scandinavia at Virta.

He continues: “With our dynamic load management technology and other smart energy features, we can offer smooth experiences for EV drivers while ensuring the grid is stable at high-traffic locations.”

A growing network of sustainable airports

Swedavia is the latest airport operator to join the Virta platform.

Finland’s Finavia airports and Berlin Brandenburg Airport have previously connected their charging infrastructure to Virta and benefited from the company’s charging solutions.

The collaboration puts Swedavia at the forefront of sustainable airport operations in Sweden and facilitates the use of electric cars for travelers between Finland and Sweden, for example.

With Virta’s platform, travelers can easily charge their electric cars at all airports and in the largest public charging network in both Sweden and Finland – from a single platform.

Travellers can also use their Virta account in over 60 countries, creating a seamless experience regardless of location.

“With this solution, Swedavia can meet the increasing demand while offering transparency and reliability for their customers. This is an important step forward for e-mobility in northern Europe,” says Lundgren.

The project is currently in the migration phase and is expected to greatly improve Swedavia’s ability to handle large volumes while maintaining network stability through Virta’s dynamic load management technology.

As the number of electric cars continues to grow, airports need to provide an appropriate number of charging points to ensure that every traveler can return to a fully charged car, while keeping operating costs in check.
