This is based on the starting point, geographical coverage needs, and traffic conditions.

AI enables route prediction and optimisation by using algorithms that can analyse a variety of data, such as current congestion, weather conditions, demand, and road restrictions.

This significantly helps to reduce travel times.

To achieve this, Makro has its own tools such as Driver Up, developed by Grupo METRO, the parent company.

“This allows us to monitor deliveries and what each truck is carrying in real time,” Muñoz details.

Not only that, but it is also an ideal resource for use during peak periods, to optimally plan logistical management.

The company’s 37 centres perform daily scheduling to anticipate demand and maintain service efficiency.

“Digitisation is a very valuable tool in ensuring the quality of our service to the hospitality sector, even during peak demand periods,” says Muñoz.

In this regard, algorithms can analyse consumption patterns, sales forecasts, and historical data to predict the quantity and type of products needed at each location.

How Does AI Reduce Range Anxiety in Electric Trucks?

Currently, several companies are still hesitant to opt for electric heavy-duty vehicles for their operations due to concerns that the range may not be sufficient to complete the journey.

This worry is not only related to the power capacity of the trucks but also to the available charging infrastructure on the roads.

It is anticipated that this issue will be resolved with the implementation of the AFIR regulation.

In the meantime, artificial intelligence (AI) presents a solution.

By considering traffic conditions, route inclines, charging times, and available “refuelling” stations, AI-based technologies ensure that drivers reach their destinations in the most efficient way possible.

How? By minimising battery usage and increasing range.

As a result, it allows users to travel without the fear of running out of charge.

At the same time, AI can address the lack of infrastructure by analysing patterns of electric vehicle usage and driving habits.

These intelligent solutions can determine the ideal locations for charging stations and predict future demand.

It also serves as a tool for operators and manufacturers of charging points.

Studying data related to charging sessions will enable companies to offer increasingly precise recommendations.

With the processing of all this information, companies can optimise the location and utilisation of charging stations.

However, a Regulatory Framework for AI is Needed

The sector indicates that these developments must be governed by a regulatory framework that sets certain limits, ensuring the safe and effective development of these technologies.

Why? Because AI should not only focus on providing efficiency and profitability but also on ensuring safety and protection for all involved.

Moreover, prominent leaders in the field of AI, particularly in the automotive sector, have called for a halt to the training of these advanced systems due to concerns about potential threats to humanity.

Thousands of researchers, joined by Elon Musk, have signed an open letter warning of potential risks and demanding a pause in activities for a specified period.
