The largest electric bus depot in the United Kingdom (UK) is undergoing a major expansion.

“We are proud to support First Bus in developing the Caledonia depot in Glasgow,” says Marcel Rümenapf, Head of Account Management eMobility Charging at Siemens.

In service since autumn 2021, the Caledonia depot currently operates a fleet of 161 electric buses daily.

It boasts an installed charging capacity of 13.7 megawatts, making it the largest electric vehicle charging hub in the UK by base installation.

The expansion not only reinforces the commitment to sustainable transport, but also introduces a strategic innovation: the shared use of the depot with commercial fleets.

This transition transforms the site into a dual-purpose charging station.

By sharing charging infrastructure between public transport and commercial fleets, First Bus maximises efficiency and accelerates the transition to zero-emission mobility,” says Rümenapf.

The depot’s strategic location near major Scottish motorways makes it an ideal charging point for a wide range of commercial drivers, extending its impact beyond urban operations.

This development marks a significant shift in how charging infrastructure is conceived—integrating public and private services within a single space to enhance both energy and operational efficiency across the electric mobility ecosystem.
