Unem (Unione Energie per la Mobilità, formerly the Petroleum Union) and Motus-E, the Italian association bringing together e-mobility stakeholders, have signed an agreement to install charging infrastructure at service stations.
The memorandum of understanding, to be signed on 25 February by the presidents of both organisations, Gianni Murano and Fabio Pressi, aims to accelerate the expansion of charging points across fuel distribution networks on Italian roads and motorways.
The signing event will take place at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, attended by Undersecretary Massimo Bitonci and Massimiliano De Toma, energy adviser to Fratelli d’Italia.
This initiative highlights the importance of technological diversification and cross-sector cooperation in the transition towards decarbonised mobility, sending a crucial message to the European Union on the need to ensure freedom of choice among sustainable transport solutions.
More Incentives: Italy Reintroduces the “Power Bonus”
The so-called “power bonus” for home charging of electric vehicles (EVs) during nighttime and public holidays has been extended for another two years.
This incentive allows users to access up to six kilowatts of power, even if their contract provides for a lower capacity.
Introduced in 2021 by the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks, and Environment (Arera), the scheme will reopen for applications on 12 February 2025 and remain available until 30 June 2026.
For those who apply, the benefit will be valid until 30 June 2027, unless further extensions are granted.
Users who had already signed up in the previous window (closed on 31 December 2024) will continue to benefit without interruption until the new deadline.
Extended Incentive with No Additional Costs
On 28 January, the authority approved the extension of the initiative, which applies to both residential and non-residential users with an electricity supply between two and 4.5 kilowatts.
The incentive does not entail any extra costs or require an increase in the contracted power, avoiding additional fixed charges on electricity bills.
Moreover, eligibility is independent of the electricity provider, as the service is managed directly by Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE).
Applications can be submitted via the official website www.gse.it, in the “Sustainable Mobility” section dedicated to EV charging.
Once enrolled, users can continue using their standard contracted power during weekday daytime hours (7:00-24:00), while charging up to six kilowatts during nighttime (00:00-7:00) and on public holidays, significantly reducing charging times.
The initiative is free for residential users and allows for an estimated annual savings of 60 euros, compared to the cost of increasing the contracted power (220 euros for non-residential users, according to Arera).
However, any additional energy consumed will be billed as usual by the user’s electricity provider.
