SNCF accelerates its shift to electric vehicles with the installation of 5,000 charging points across France. To deliver this transformation, the company has selected Virta, the Finnish EV charging solutions provider, together with Eiffage Énergie Systèmes, responsible for installation and maintenance.
This three-way partnership aims to progressively equip SNCF sites with charging infrastructure, supporting the electrification of its service and company vehicle fleet. SNCF Immobilier has entrusted Virta with managing the network for a minimum period of six years.
“We designed a tailor-made solution with Eiffage Énergie Systèmes to offer a turnkey package including design, configuration, supply, installation, operation and maintenance of the charge points, as well as management and support for end-customers,” explains Brendan Shepard, Sales Team Lead at Virta.
Results already visible
Today, 105 charging points operate across SNCF administrative buildings and technical centres, with 34 additional units currently being installed. Most chargers are Alfen Double models, customised to SNCF’s requirements.
The project also includes the migration of legacy infrastructure, such as the 20 Schneider chargers previously deployed in Saint-Denis, showcasing the adaptability of the Virta solution to varied technical setups.
A solution tailored to fleets and motorists
SNCF Immobilier opted for a Virta Launch contract with the Fleet solution, enabling efficient management of private charging at its depots. Service vehicle drivers benefit from complimentary charging at SNCF charge points.
New charging sites have been opened in north-west France and the Paris region, allowing employees to charge personal vehicles at a discounted rate. Drivers can access the service using the Virta mobile app or a dedicated charging tag.
Supporting regulatory compliance
The initiative aligns with the 2019 Loi d’Orientation des Mobilités (LOM), which accelerates the deployment of EV charging infrastructure and requires companies with fleets of over 100 vehicles to progressively ensure that 50% of new purchases are low-emission by 2030.
This partnership between SNCF, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes and Virta demonstrates how a Nordic scale-up can collaborate effectively with major French companies to deliver advanced, flexible tools for electric fleet management.
