Volkswagen to cut production at several German plants amid weak EV demand

Zwickau and Emden have seen low demand for electric vehicles, while Osnabrück is reporting weak sales of the convertibles produced at the plant.
Volkswagen to Cut Production at Several German Plants Amid Weak Demand

Automotive group Volkswagen will reduce production at several of its plants in Germany due to low demand, the company has confirmed to the DPA news agency.

At the Zwickau and Dresden plants, production will be halted for one week starting from 6 October.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, shutdown days are also expected in Emden, though these are still being negotiated with the works council.

At Volkswagen’s Osnabrück plant, production cuts have already been decided, with at least one closure day per week scheduled until the end of the year, as confirmed by the company. In addition, a full week of downtime is planned for October.

“Volkswagen is adjusting the production schedule at its plants in line with current demand for the models produced there. In some factories, this will result in shift cancellations in the coming weeks,” a group spokesperson said.

The main reason is weak demand for electric vehicles (EVs), which are produced in Zwickau and Emden.

Osnabrück is facing low sales figures for the convertibles manufactured at the site.

In contrast, at the main Wolfsburg plant, special shifts will continue to be scheduled—almost every weekend until Christmas—due to strong demand for combustion-engine models such as the Golf, Tiguan, and Tayron, which are produced there.
