The first 25 electric buses financed with National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds secured by the Municipality of Florence have arrived: this marks the first step in the city’s electric transition, backed by an investment of 49.7 million euros.
The buses were presented at the AT depot in Via Pratese, where a dedicated charging station with 22 bays has been constructed.
Attending the event were the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani; the President of Autolinee Toscane, Gianni Bechelli; AT’s CEO, Jean-Luc Laugaa; Henry Zhang, Managing Director of BYD Europe (AT’s partner for electric vehicles); and Andrea Giorgio, Councillor for Mobility for the Municipality of Florence.
“Tuscany is today taking a fundamental step towards sustainable and innovative mobility, with the arrival of the first 25 electric buses funded by the PNRR. This milestone represents not only a concrete investment in public transport but also a clear commitment to the environment and to improving citizens’ quality of life,” declares Giani.
“With the arrival of further vehicles and the completion of charging infrastructure, we reaffirm Tuscany’s commitment to leading an irreversible transformation: a public transport system that is increasingly modern, accessible, and environmentally friendly,” he adds.
The buses presented form the first batch of a total supply of 70 BYD-manufactured vehicles.
“We are proud to support the city of Florence in its transition towards zero-emission public transport with our fully electric buses,” says Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Europe.
The remaining 45 will arrive by 2026, alongside eight Iveco buses.
Each bus can carry up to 85 passengers and will operate on routes 6, 20, and 23.
A second charging facility, with 52 bays, is currently under construction in Viale XI Agosto, on the site formerly occupied by the Olmatello nomad camp. The works are expected to be completed in 2026.

“Thanks to national and European funding, a process is now underway that will result in a fleet of dozens of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging areas,” comments Laugaa.
“This is a major investment by the Municipality of Florence in public transport and sustainable mobility. By 2026, we will have almost 100 new electric vehicles,” explains Giorgio.
