Figures from the Road Traffic Authority OFV show that electric car registrations in Norway experienced another significant increase in April, reaching 10,051 units.
These figures represent a significant increase compared to the previous month and the same month last year.
Compared to March 2024, the 10,051 newly registered units in April represent an increase of 1,342 units, or 15.4 per cent.
Furthermore, compared to April 2023, the growth was even more significant, as at that time, 7,471 electric cars had been registered.
This means that in April 2024, the number of registered units increased by 2,580 vehicles, or 34.5 per cent.
It is worth mentioning that last month, 11,241 cars were registered in Norway in all driving types (a 25.2 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2023).
The proportion of “zero-emission cars” was 89.4 per cent.
However, as fuel cell vehicles play only a secondary role, nearly all of the 10,051 new electrically powered cars were battery electric vehicles.
This means that the market share of purely electric cars has significantly increased over the year.
In April 2023, it was “only” 83.2 per cent, and in April 2022, it was 74.1 per cent.
It is noteworthy that if plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are also included, 91 per cent of all new cars have charging capability.
On the other hand, the fact that the market share of PHEVs is only 1.6 per cent demonstrates that this technology is declining in Norway.
Last month, only 178 new PHEVs were registered, a 75 per cent decrease compared to April 2023.
Meanwhile, total hybrids represented 520 new registrations in April.
It is pertinent to mention that regarding new cars with diesel engines, an unusually high number of 356 units were registered in April, accounting for a diesel market share of 3.2 per cent.
Finally, regarding models, it is worth mentioning that during the first quarter, the Tesla Model Y was Norwegians’ preferred vehicle.
However, in April, it only achieved 701 new registrations, placing it fourth.
At the top of the model ranking is the Volvo EX30 with 1,191 registrations, followed by the VW ID.4 with 986 units and the VW ID.3 with 749 units.
They are followed by the Toyota bZ4X (with 519), the Audi Q4 e-tron (with 407), the MG4 (with 361), the Hyundai Kona (with 315), Nissan Ariya (with 295), Ford Mustang Mach-E (with 295), and Honda e:Ny1 (with 283).
